TEENS TAKING TO THE STREETS AND TERRORISING LOCAL RESIDENTS

Residents are reporting living in fear of destructive weekend parties with juveniles on the streets of Cotton Tree to Alexandra Headland Surf Club and they’ve had enough.

Member for Maroochydore and Shadow Minister for Integrity in Government, Fiona Simpson MP, said she has been contacted by residents after a weekend of chaos where cars were pelted with bottles.

“Friday night saw about 100 juveniles on foot, bikes and e-scooters taking to the street drinking alcohol, throwing bottles at passing cars.? The beach was also littered with bottles, broken glass and I’m told several people got the glass in their feet the following morning on their way to their morning surf or swim.

“Residents have reported being terrified with kids doing wheelies behind the police cars, jumping into private properties, running/scootering/biking all over Alex Parade and Aerodrome Road. They also said there were fights all over the place.

“Police on the Sunshine Coast are working hard to keep our whole community safe, but they haven’t been given the resources by the State Government and are limited by the current Juvenile Justice Act which has sparked a youth crime crisis in our State.

“There are 322 fewer police in Queensland than this time last year despite Labor promising an extra 1450. On the Sunshine Coast I hear regular reports that there are only one or two police cars across some of our biggest towns on Friday night and they are stretched thin.”

“The Government isn’t being honest about the actual police numbers and they are burning them out and they are leaving in droves.

“It’s time the police were properly supported, resourced and had the right laws to keep our streets safe and to be able to do their job.”

May I say I have been a victim of these out of control teens in Maroochydore and do not like the fact that teens can and think it's fun to abuse ridicule and terrorise a adult all because they asked them to stop the inappropriate language they're using at the bus stop or on the bus. They threatened you abuse you and to the point where 16 teens think's it funny and ok to do so. They certainly are out of control. They then have it recorded and put on social media. As a person with mental health issues myself and my trip to work is a lengthy one. Because I may accidentally sing a line from a song I'm listening to and colour a page in a book while waiting for a bus. They think it's ok the harassed someone. Then plaza security come speak to them and call the police who are powerless and can only do so much. It's the police who need the court to hand out harsher punishments and set an example and make them accountable for their actions. No matter how bad your up bringing is or good there is no excuse for the behaviour these teens portray to the public. Wanting to fight a 43 yr old woman who has asked them to not use the language due to its morally wrong and inappropriate and they pretty much think they know the law because of h

Why has it taken months to discover this weekly rampage?? I have seen a couple of police cars drive by after complaints Also the two stop signs in Alexandra Parade near Beach Life are useless and need policing before someone gets killed as people use it as a rat run to miss the traffic lights Patrols and presence is what is needed and the current state and federal governments spend our taxes on ridiculous pie in the sky projects eg The Voice

Thanks Fiona, I certainly appreciate the anguish that this situation creates for everyone. I doubt that the essence and cause of our youth problem is simply a lack of police. What structural societal changes would your LNP govt take to nip the problem well before the children even think that stealing a car is a good life choice.
