Secrets to Winning in Business and at Home

Teenage Troubles at Home Can Destroy Business

We have all seen it…?

A thriving business, run by a confident, effective leader. They rise to success and fortune… and then a few years later, they are gone.?

People wonder why. They blame the economy, politics, but insiders know. The secret killer was trouble at home.?

Family relationships define so much of the quality of our lives and how effective we are in every category of our lives.

I recently spoke with a number of therapists, life coaches, business coaches and counselors. “What are the main issues you see that cause people pain, suffering, addictions and distraction?”, I asked.?

Without exception, all of them said the number one issue was related to family relationships troubles. Daddy issues. Mommy issues.? Trouble with teens. Marriage problems.?

When things are not right at home, things are not right in life.?

So what do you do about it??

Today, let’s focus on the challenges with parenting teenagers. A troubled teen can wreck your focus, bring you misery, and cost you a huge amount of money… not to mention embarrassment.?

Instead of having joy at home and total focus on your business and career, you end up spending time with school counselors, paying for speeding tickets or bail, apologizing to other parents, losing sleep, arguing with your spouse, etc….?

There is one very specific shift you can make today that can bring harmony back to your relationship with your teen and joy to your home life. In turn, this will empower you to be more effective at business and wealth creation.?

Meet Aly Pain: Top Teen Parenting Expert

My wife, Margie, and I recently sat down and had a ground-breaking interview with Aly Pain. She is a certified life coach and teenager parenting expert. Aly has spent years researching and applying scientifically-backed strategies for improving family dynamics.?

She's helped countless parents transform their relationships with their teenagers, and she shared her wisdom with us in an practical, eye-opening interview.

The Game-Changing Idea: Parenting is About Relationships, Not Control

The key idea that struck me during our conversation with Aly was this: Parenting is not about control.?

It's about building a relationship based on mutual respect.?

This simple yet profound concept has the power to change the way you interact with your teenager.

Actionable Insights for Immediate Impact

Redefine Respect

The first step is to redefine what respect means in your relationship with your teen. It's not about obedience or compliance; it's about understanding each other's boundaries and finding a middle ground.

When you come from a place of respect, you model respect for others, including your children.?

This approach to mutual respect is rooted in the idea that relationships are not transactions but emotional connections. This requires work and understanding from both sides, but ROI is more love, peace and joy in the home.?

Understand the Emotional Drivers

Your teen's actions are driven by emotions.?

Understanding these emotional drivers can help you get to the root cause of a teen's actions, rather than just addressing the surface-level issue. If parents are only focused on the outcome, it's like trying to put out a fire by chasing the smoke.?

Instead of focusing solely on their behavior, dig deeper to understand the emotional experience they are trying to create - the deeper reasons behind their behavior. This will give you valuable insights into how to motivate, encourage and connect with them.

Anyone who understands marketing and sales will recognize this pattern. It is key to success in business… and at home.?

Apply the “Compassionate Consequence Formula”

Aly introduced us to her "compassionate consequence formula”. This approach is scientifically backed and helps in achieving long-term behavior change.

Here are the key elements:?

  1. Connect Emotionally First: Before imposing any consequences, first connect with your teen on an emotional level. This involves understanding the emotional experience your teen was trying to create when they made a particular choice.

  1. Understand the Why: Seek to understand why your teen acted in a certain way. This could involve asking questions to get to the root of their emotional state or the outcome they were hoping for.

  1. Avoid Authoritarian Thinking: Aly warns against falling into the trap of authoritarian thinking, which seeks instant obedience and compliance. This approach is transactional, not relational, and it doesn't foster long-term behavioral change.

  1. Focus on Emotional Change: We all know that lasting behavior change occurs at an emotional level. By connecting emotionally first, you can guide your teens toward making better choices in the future.

  1. Balance Authority and Autonomy: As parents should maintain your role as the authority figure - this is vital to the stability of your home and your teens good mental and emotional health.? But, this doesn't mean exerting power over your teen. Instead, it means guiding them through a relationship built on mutual respect and understanding.

I love the advice Aly shared with you Joshua T. Boswell. Thankfully, we got through the teenage years without too much strife and I'm proud of the young adults my children have become. Still, I know that this advice would have helped me ease some tensions back then.
