Our family has its quirks. Most Sunday evenings, we settle in for an episode of Ted Lasso. To say it has become more than just a feel-good ritual would be an understatement—it’s a masterclass in optimism, perseverance, and unexpected wisdom. If you haven’t had the pleasure of watching it yet, consider this your invitation to the Lasso clubhouse.
Last Sunday, we were cracking up at Rebecca Welton (AFC Richmond’s fearless owner) as she demonstrated her “grow big” move—a signature power pose for when she needs to summon her inner confidence.
I turned to my family, mid-laugh, and said, “I do that!”
Cue wide-eyed astonishment, followed by demands for a demonstration. Naturally, I obliged, striking my best superhero stance, much to their delight (and a lot of giggling). When I struck my pose, the reaction was unanimous: laughter, followed by declarations of, “Mum’s lost it!”— what can I say, confidence is contagious!
While I’d love to be brave enough to share my own power poses with the world, I think you’ll find Rebecca’s far more entertaining. Between her towering confidence and Ted’s perpetual optimism, the show reminded me of an empowering lesson I’ve learned: the transformative impact of body language.
The Power of Power Poses
If you’re new to the concept, a power pose is a simple technique designed to help you channel confidence—even when you don’t feel it.
Picture this: feet planted firmly, hands on hips, chest out, chin slightly raised—the very image of a superhero ready to save the day.
Research from Amy Cuddy (of TED Talk fame or one of my favourite books "Presence") suggests that holding such a pose for just two minutes can reduce cortisol (stress hormone) and boost testosterone (confidence hormone).
So, does Ted Lasso literally strike power poses? Not exactly. But his body language, unshakeable presence, and ability to lift others up are the essence of one. Whether he’s hanging a “Believe” sign in the locker room or finding a quirky metaphor to inspire his team, Ted shows us that confidence doesn’t have to be flashy—it just has to be authentic.
How to Channel Your Inner Lasso
Want to harness the power of power posing and a bit of Lasso-style self-assurance? Here are a few tips:

1. Before the Big Meeting
Got a presentation coming up? Stand like Wonder Woman. Hands on hips, chest out, deep breaths for two minutes. Visualise success, then crush it. It’s not magic—it’s science!
2. During Networking Events
Smile like Ted, strike a pose like Rebecca. Confidence = activated. Open posture, a genuine grin, and maybe even throw in a compliment. Lasso would be proud.
3. After a Setback
When life throws you a curveball, take a page from Ted’s playbook: shake it off (literally, if you need to), strike a celebratory pose, and remind yourself that confidence starts from the inside out.
Why It Works
Ted Lasso isn’t just a football coach; he’s a walking example of what it means to embrace confidence, kindness, and vulnerability.
Power posing? It’s like the physical embodiment of Ted’s ethos. It reminds us to take up space, own our moments, and approach challenges with an open heart and mind.
Over to You
Be like Ted. Go out there, take up space, and remember—you don’t need a team of Premier League footballers to channel your inner coach. Believe in yourself, power pose, and win the day!
What’s your go-to “power pose” moment? Have you ever tried it before a challenge or during a tough day? Share your story in the comments—I’d love to hear it!

3 个月Working with people about to undergo high-pressure interviews, I've often witnessed first-hand the power of something as simple as a smile and good posture. Often the acting 'open, authentic and positive' can come before the actually feeling 'open, authentic and positive,' and body language is an invaluable tool for shortening that divide. Thanks for sharing!
