TED Global:

It was in the Old Library at Ashridge House that I first presented my unusual idea. it was a one day conference on Strategic Change. I'd been studying change and strategy, noting the rise in scale towards global for enterprises and noting the early impact of the internet on the pace of communications. I had watched as Eli Goldrat put it. The 'Cost world' where the accountants had decimated businesses by trying to cut their way to profitability move into the 'Throughput world' where the focus on real customer needs and the need for pace and engagement of all the staff and stakeholders was foremost.

The idea I presented was simply that the pace, scale, and complexity of change appeared to be rising exponentially against an ability to adapt and change that was linear.

The audience liked this unusual idea. It explained how we had arrived at the concept of Emergent strategy. It explained why old style leadership from-the-top was faltering.

The world has changed completely and yet few of us recognise this and continue thinking and behaving as if it hasn't says business educator Eddie Obeng - and creative output cannot keep up. In this spirited talk, he highlights three important changes we should understand for better productivity, and calls for a stronger culture of "smart failure."

Years later, I presented the idea at a TED global conference and shook the roof to the rafters. I was delighted to be invited. Normally business types and professional speakers are not allowed at TED Global but my idea was so powerful they decided it was an "idea worth sharing".
