Eyes to the sky: Enduring eternity

?

The history of IT has been a steady evolution of pioneering innovations in interaction, information, and computation, the enduring eternities of modern computing.

Computers were formerly thought to be more-or-less perfect devices that could only convert discrete inputs into discrete outputs and never do the erroneous computations. If a calculation or business process ever had a flaw, human error, not computer fault, was always to blame.

However, the business world is evolving a new sense of what it means to trust robots as machines intrude on ever-more humanlike jobs that go beyond simple figure crunching and into the domain of discernment and decision-making via artificial intelligence (AI).

"Trying to foresee the future is like trying to drive down a country road at night without lights, while gazing out the back window," the late management guru Peter Drucker once quipped.

Change is occurring so quickly when it comes to predicting new technological trends that the back window might as well be fogged up.

In 2022, nuclear fusion made its first steps from the domain of science fiction to the realm of science reality, while NFTs went from being the flavor of the month to yesterday's leftovers.

However, people who keep up with the most recent innovations can identify trends in the direction that civilizations are moving and predict the technology that will help them get there.

Here are expert opinions on which technology will transform our lives this year.

So, what exactly is going on here?

Artificial intelligence

Our daily lives now include artificial intelligence (AI), which is used in everything from social media algorithms to e-commerce. An explosion of AI-generated visuals and music is expected in 2023, according to Ayesha Khanna, co-founder and CEO of Addo, a company that provides AI and data solutions. She continues, "AI will become the next team member for people in many positions, offering ideas and drafts, even if it won't replace humans."

This year, "one emphasis of AI will be the augmentation of people, as new technologies become available to enable workforces to fully use AI," predicts futurist and author Bernard Marr, whose works include "Future Skills" and "Business Trends in Practice."

Khanna, however, cautions that additional work will be required to guarantee the objectivity and accuracy of generative AI co-pilots, particularly in fields like healthcare where there may be major repercussions if an AI assistant suggests the incorrect course of treatment to a clinician.

The Metaverse

Khanna predicts that the popularity of spending time in virtual online worlds will increase in 2023, despite the fact that Meta, the firm formerly known as Facebook, lost billions of dollars on its metaverse initiatives.

According to her, "retail and entertainment corporations will undertake more pilot projects on how to increase customer engagement and loyalty in the different metaverses, particularly game platforms like Roblox."

"In 2023, firms will be driven to stage concerts, fashion weeks, customer journeys, and edutainment activities by metaverse natives who have grown up gaming and socializing in other digital realities."

Marr continues by predicting that more modest businesses will join the larger ones that have already opened "outposts" on metaverse platforms.

Businesses will need to think about how they can take advantage of these opportunities to create immersive and effective experiences, he adds, since the metaverse will also become more portable and accessible through devices like headsets and smart glasses.

Sustainability Tech

Abishur Prakash, co-founder and geopolitical futurist at the Center for Innovating the Future (CIF), in Toronto, and author of "The World is Vertical: How Technology is Remaking Globalization," predicts that "the entire field of sustainability, underpinned by technologies, will play a monumental role in 2023."

Clean energy initiatives, such as those that transport solar-generated electricity from Africa to Europe, will advance in 2023, giving the global energy conflict a new facet.

In 2023, as we continue to increase the capacity for renewable energy, short-term and long-term energy storage, such as batteries and hydrogen, will be essential, according to Cynthia Selin, an associate professor at the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University.

According to her, continuous expansion, the creation of the required infrastructure, and improved cost competitiveness are all possible for clean hydrogen (including hydrogen produced using renewable energy). The most likely focus of consumer-facing advances relating to hydrogen in '23 will be long-haul haulage, according to the report.

According to Selin, the relevance of carbon capture and storage, which involves extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it, will increase.

?Along with other natural removal techniques like reforestation, she predicts that direct air capture will continue to attract attention. With the help of encouraging legislation, new demonstration projects are springing up all over the world, increasing our ability to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Semiconductors and Self-reliance

According to Prakash, the conflict in Ukraine will mark the beginning of a new age in geopolitics and globalization.

The search for independence, a driving force behind vertical globalization, will pick up speed in 2023, according to him, having an impact on all facets of technology. He continues, mentioning how Chinese automakers are investing in their own ships to sell their vehicles around the globe, citing Apple's intentions to relocate manufacturing elsewhere.

The competition for the semiconductors that power our cellphones, laptops, cars, and home appliances will be another trend to keep an eye on. According to Prakash, semiconductors will revolutionize international affairs in 2023 and pit the US and China against one another in this market.

The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a system of interconnected sensors and infrastructure that can gather information on everything from home heating to gridlock on major streets.

In 2023, according to Selin, the Internet of Things will keep changing the energy industry. "Smart thermostats that monitor energy use and control temperature help to lower energy use and costs. Devices that use intelligent sensors and data-driven intelligence to guide energy decisions and promote energy efficiency are proliferating on the market.

Marr projects that by 2023, IoT-related goods and services will grow, "with gadgets like smartwatches offering advanced sensors for monitoring various health indicators."

Additionally, "allowing more complicated machine-to-machine interactions by defining global standards and protocols that devices may use to communicate with each other, as well as increasing IoT security to avoid attacks," he adds, will be an emphasis.

Why should I be concerned?

Technology engagement, as we projected in the prologue, is ready to move from discrete digital realities to ambient computing, where users can step outside the glass and glance up from their devices to a reality that synchronizes with technology without effort. The ultimate goal of technology engagement and the unifying denominator of each of the aforementioned paths is simplicity.

The concerns, particularly those related to cybersecurity, privacy, safety, regulation, and ethics, should be understood as we get ready for the future. Given that immersive technologies could have a significant impact on the economy, boards and operators at the top levels of businesses should spend their time developing the technology in a way that upholds trust and creates value.

If history continues to be a guide for future-ready innovators, then moving through the glass and beyond will likely require moving beyond established orthodoxies. Preparing now could help propel businesses from the current technological advantage to the next.

Let’s keep moving forward and transforming with technology.
