Technology Trends to Expect in 2023

The technology industry is dynamic, with new developments entering the market yearly. We discuss the latest technology trends you can expect to see in 2023.

Industry-Wide Adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI):

New developments in AI have given businesses the ability to extract intelligence from their data more easily. Where previously, these insights could only be extracted through some form of advanced-level coding, “no-code” AI simply requires users to make use of drag-and-drop features to extract the same type of intelligence from their data (Marr, 2022). The increased accessibility to AI due to easier interfaces and more reasonable pricing is expected to accelerate the adoption of this technology across industries (HCLTech, 2022).

The Growth of Green Tech:

Over the last 10 years, sustainability-focused technological improvements have resulted in the increased production of renewable energy, which is an affordable alternative to non-renewable “fossil fuels” (Busckup & Keenan, 2023). This, coupled with a worldwide focus on promoting sustainable business practices and reaching net zero, has spurred the drive to improve current green technologies as well as to develop new green technologies (Buscksup and Keenan, 2023).?

HLCTech (2022) states that businesses will begin implementing green technology into their various business environments in 2023 with a focus on their IT and operations environments. It is predicted that by 2025, half of CIOs will have developed IT operational analytics that will report on the company’s carbon footprint and adherence to sustainability targets (HCLTech, 2022).

The Metaverse:

The metaverse is a “3D virtual space” in which people can immerse themselves and interact with others in an intangible world created through technology (Tucci, 2022).?

Marr (2023) predicts that 2023 will see an increased adoption of the metaverse by organizations as they adopt alternative ways of interacting with their different stakeholders.?An example of where the metaverse is already being utilized by organizations is in their employee training programs through the use of metaverse technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) (Marr, 2022).

HLCTech (2023) predicts that 2023 will mark the development of “more sophisticated avatars” in immersive experiences. These avatars will mimic our physical appearances and will embody our physical mannerisms, such as “body language and gestures,” resulting in more life-like representations of people in the virtual world (Marr, 2022).?

2023 will also lead to an increased number of “live events” hosted in the metaverse.?These events would enable a person to interact, meet and network with colleagues in a virtual environment that will recreate the feeling of being in an actual, physical room with them (Pratt, 2022).?An example of a live event of this caliber is the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum that happened in January 2023 (Dienst, 2023). The virtual setting of this event was inspired by Davos, a ski resort that has hosted this meeting in the past (Dienst, 2023). In this virtual event guests could experience a hot-air balloon ride over a projection of the world’s oceans (Dienst, 2023). The guest could then take an “ocean elevator” to an underwater conference room where they could meet other attendees (Dienst, 2023).

The Development of Superapps

Superapps are “all-in-one mobile applications” that provide a variety of services, allowing an end-user to conveniently perform various tasks within a single application rather than utilising multiple individual apps (Webster, 2022).?

HCLTech (2022) explains that “low-code” and “no-code platforms” are the main driving forces behind the development of Superapps as “low-code” and “no-code” reduces the associated costs and difficulty of creating an application from scratch. Gartner predicts that over 50% of the worldwide population will make use of at least one Superapp daily by the year 2027.
