Technology and Science Highlights of the Week #12 June 2024

1. A Chatbot Has Been Developed that Allows a Person to Talk to an Older Version of Themselves

A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has created an AI-powered chatbot that allows users to converse with a probable version of themselves in the future.

Previous studies have shown that when young people spend time talking to older people, they often gain a broader perspective on life and how their personal future might unfold. The authors of the new development decided that the best way to do this would be to get advice from themselves.

2. New Night Vision Lenses Can be Inserted into Regular Glasses

Researchers in Australia are aiming to make night vision affordable by doing away with bulky and expensive headsets and lens attachments. The technology could be packaged as a night vision film that weighs less than a gram and can be placed over regular glasses with lenses.

3. A Sound-Suppressing Silk Fabric

Fabric as thin as a human hair reduces noise by 75%. A new material with unique properties was invented at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Piezoelectric elements are woven into the silk fabric. When deformed, they generate an electrical signal and suppress noise in two ways: they create interference or block sounds. Depending on the noise source, the fabric can be used in one mode or another.

4. Japan’s Pioneering LignoSat: The World’s First Wooden Satellite Set to Revolutionize Space Exploration

Japan will make history by launching the world’s first wooden satellite, LignoSat, in September. The satellite, developed by scientists from Kyoto University and Sumitomo Forestry, will be sent to the International Space Station (ISS) and then launched into orbit. The satellite was made from magnolia wood due to its strength and workability, a decision made after space tests on cherry, birch, and magnolia chips. The wood came from Sumitomo Forestry.

5. Speech in the Text: Neurons are Now open for a Long Time

Neuroscientists say that scanning neurons from the brain's memory center can do more than just review past experiences. Brain cells are also capable of 'looking into the future'—that is, repeating actions that have not yet occurred.

Researchers at the University of Michigan analyzed the brain waves of rats during wakefulness and sleep. Readings were taken before, during, and after the animals' maze tests to assess nerve cell activity during the resting period. 'We correlated the activity of each individual neuron with the activity of all other neurons,' says anesthesiologist Kamran Diba.

6. Elon Musk Plans to Build one Mega-Rocket Every Day

SpaceX continues work on the Starfactory, a new production complex being built at the Starbase site in South Texas (USA). After the successful test flight of the super-heavy spacecraft Starship, Elon Musk's company has set another ambitious goal: to produce one rocket every day at the facility.

Investments in the new enterprise amount to $100 million, and the factory area will cover 9 thousand square meters. This plant will allow SpaceX to implement its ambitious plan of producing one Starship spacecraft per day.
