The latest craze in business and spilling over into the job search is the use of AI or Artificial Intelligence. Mr. Mark Cuban is even on the stump telling the world that if you don’t actively embrace AI you are going to be left behind. OMG…
I recently listened to a job seeker who has fully embraced the so-called benefits of AI in enhancing the effectiveness of the job search process making it much easier to manage the online application process. He told his story with great energy and enthusiasm as one who has seen and embraced the AI light, At the conclusion of the talk, he acknowledged ……. with somewhat less enthusiasm, that he had just secured a new job via the help and advocacy of a neighbor, I believe is called networking at its finest.
From my window on the world, there is always something new and improved in technology, and if we are to remain relevant, we should embrace so as not to be left behind. While not denying so-called progress, one should be careful to really examine the features and benefits of the latest and greatest and not be swept along in the hype.
Under the heading “Some Things Never Change” in my 40 years as a career coach, advisor, mentor, teacher and client partner I have seen little change in how people are really finding or creating new and rewarding employment opportunities. 80/85% of my clients land new jobs through personal referrals or advocates. No other alternative, including the newest in technology, comes close.
There are no “absolutes” in the world of job transition and finding, but learning from those who have been successful should certainly be taken into consideration. Overwhelmingly people are hired today because they are personally known by the hiring person, and thereby reducing the risk of making a wrong hire. As a job seeker you need to become memorable to those who can help and hire you. Anything less and your chances are slim.
Having a balanced job search plan generally works best, again considering how people are really finding jobs today. You plan of action should be weighed heavily on in-person networking with the minority or your time and efforts put into technology and the Internet where you still effectively remain in isolation and a stranger, neither good for you.
