What is ChatGPT?

November 30 2022 marked an iconic date in the history of technology. It transformed and revolutionized the entire industry in one go.

ChatGPT or Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer launched as a large language model-based chatbot developed by OpenAI.

Simply put, it is an AI tool that enables users to refine any interaction for a desired level of detail, tone, format, style, length, or language used. It is an NLP tool driven by AI technology that allows human-like conversations and can answer questions or assist humans with tasks of composing emails, essays and even coding.

Salient features of ChatGPT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ChatGPT)

· Its developer is OpenAI

· It is written in Python

· The Engine computations are GPT-3.5 / GPT-4

· Its platform is Cloud computing platforms

· It has types that include Chatbot, Large language model, or Generative pre-trained transformer

According to research, ChatGPT is the fastest-growing technology of all time.

ChatGPT reached 100 million active users in January 2023, just two months after its official launch.

However, some researchers expressed concern over the potential of ChatGPT and feel it can displace human intelligence while also enabling plagiarism and misinformation.

How does ChatGPT work?

One can easily access ChatGPT through their website (www.chat.openai.com/chat) and create an account for free for access to the basic version. To employ advanced features, one has to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus. Once signed in, one can immediately chat with ChatGPT and get the task done by just typing the request. ChatGPT can be effortlessly accessed from mobile phones too.

Chatbots like ChatGPT are empowered by large amounts of data and computing techniques. It helps them to make predictions to thread words together in a meaningful and creative manner. They not only exploit a vast amount of data and information stored but also interpret words in context. This further enables them to mimic speech patterns while dispatching a realm of knowledge from their collected and stored data.

ChatGPT has provoked technology companies like Google and Microsoft to develop their large language model tools namely Bard and Bing respectively, which employ programs that take in prompts and develop refined responses. OpenAI is a highly revolutionary launch that is letting everyone experiment with it directly through a user interface as well.

Uses of ChatGPT

While there are numerous ways ChatGPT can be used to make work easier and faster, a few that are commonly in use include;

· For writing blogs and essays

· For the coding process

· To create an app

· To build a resume, cover letter, or Excel formulas

· For proofreading or editing purposes

· For generating video scripts, surveys, or quizzes

· For leading market research and product descriptions

Limitations of ChatGPT

Though ChatGPT being an AI-enabled system that generates content swiftly with data stored and ensures work being easier, ChatGPT has a few limitations to its functioning. It is known that the data gets stored or is generated from ChatGPT’s valve’, so, the data may not be up-to-date in many cases and ChatGPT may end up generating inaccurate information.

Therefore, even after using ChatGPT, the content will have to be cross-checked for accuracy and being updated. ChatGPT’s data being outdated it cannot generate any latest content.

Which again is a major drawback. Also, the results of ChatGPT are considered to be very robotic and non-human-like, taking away creativity from any content. It just appears as plain formal text content. Such work would need additional tuning and human touch to make it better and improved.

Many responses of ChatGPT are found to be complex and in lack of true insight. ChatGPT does not provide an in-depth analysis of any data or statistics. It may generate statistics but no real understanding of what the generated statistics mean or how they relate to the content generated. Thereby, it is not able to cite proper sources which sort of questions the credibility of ChatGPT-generated content. It is seen by researchers that ChatGPT is purely text content and may not be able to interpret content tones of sarcasm, irony, or dark humor. And it is also known to provide users with biased information that can offend while it may also occasionally deliver information or content that is not allowed or harmful.

ChatGPT statistics (https://www.demandsage.com/chatgpt-statistics)

The usage of ChatGPT is growing since its launch but whether it is here to stay, only time can tell. The initial launch statistics have been exceedingly incredible and did disrupt the technology world.

· ChatGPT has had over 100 million users as per the latest figures

· Approximately 60% of ChatGPT users are males and 40% are females

· By the end of the year 2023, ChatGPT is predicted to generate a revenue of $200 million

· Around 88% of the traffic on ChatGPT is direct while 4% of traffic is directed from social media platforms

· ChatGPT is accessible in more than 160 countries around the globe

· 7 nations namely China, Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Iran, Belarus, and Venezuela have ChatGPT banned in their countries

With upgrades, ChatGPT has become one of the most powerful chatbots available and many businesses as well as industries have adopted this technology for content generation, customer support, data analysis, healthcare, and so on.

ChatGPT analysis

As seen how ChatGPT can employ conversations swiftly, rightly, and creatively and while there are numerous advantages to utilizing ChatGPT for business, learning, and other trades, it is analyzed that technology is not always accurate. Some sources claim ChatGPT is not fact-checked’ which generates data capable of bias and even takes help from human feedback to improve its accuracy.

So, though Artificial Intelligence has reached the tip of the iceberg and has numerous beneficial inventions now and then that refine and innovate the technology industry, there are still areas of research and improvement.

It is also observed that generative AI such as ChatGPT can become something too human-like which can be seen as a threat. Humans have this yearning for AI to do things for them but fail to understand their limitations and how far should those boundaries be pushed. Like — as rightly seen by some researchers, quoting them — ‘Has the AI risk depicted in the 90’s movie ‘The Terminator’ been forgotten!!
