Technology Disruption? Good or Bad

I have seen this before and for some it will be death and others birth. Dropbox, Shopify and others have announced downsizing in recent weeks with an excuse targeted at AI and a changing technological landscape in the near future. When they speak to AI though they are too narrow in their thinking and preclude most of us from thinking about what is really happening not this years example of it. What they are speaking of is "Technology Disruption". As a retired senior technology leader I have watched this play out. Mini Computers from DEC and Data General invade wall street in the 1970s and introduce analytics. Firms adopt mini computers and dump their IBM 1130s and AS400s. The availability of analytics to empower realtime data to a desk follows (thank you Michael Bloomberg 1980s ). The addition of desktop computing power to evaluate real time fixed income portfolios and create the whole derivatives market ( thank you Bear Sterns and Sun Microsystems 1990s ). And off Wall street changes to how we did Supply Chain (thank you SAP), And the list goes on... real time trading, just in time analytics, an incredible change in software development (time and approach including open software), the deaths of many many companies and the birth of many many more such as gigantic Computing power and analytics that support all new markets ( like real time sports betting ). Everyone of these required massive layoffs (even down to the local book maker) or the death to major firms (there is no more Digital Equipment Corp (DEC) or Data General or even SUN which replaced them ) but birth to tremendous new entities from Snowflake to Draft Kings. So lets not mourn the losses but smile at the future.
