Technology’s Impact on the Future Workforce

Technology’s Impact on the Future Workforce

We all know that the construction industry is grappling with a labor problem. It's a challenge we face every day. However, the good news is that technology, particularly in construction, is opening up innovative ways to address this issue. Between customer conversations, discussions with students and educators and industry events I have been able to gather some best in class examples of where our industry is putting technology to work to grow and improve our future workforce.

Engaging, Recruiting, and Retaining Employees with Technology

One of the key things I've learned from recent conversations is the role technology plays in employee engagement, recruitment, and retention. People are drawn to innovative workplaces that solve problems in compelling ways. One of our customers shared how they've invested significantly in canvassing their employees for ideas on deploying AI within their organization. The result? A significant boost in engagement, particularly among the younger employees.

Job candidates are increasingly interested in understanding a company's tech stack and its commitment to innovation. Today's entrants into the construction industry are keen on changing the status quo. They're not just passive participants; they're active change-makers. So, leveraging technology not only makes their jobs easier but also shows them that you're investing in their future and in innovative construction methods.

“We need to make construction cool again. We must be advocates for industry in high school programs and university programs. We need to show them that it’s not the industry from 40 or 50 years ago,” he said. “It’s a new, modern industry.” - Kris Lengieza

Accelerating Employee Education with Technology

The second noteworthy point centers on how technology is accelerating employee education. Today, we're able to extract massive amounts of data and information, which we can deploy as actionable insights for workers in their daily tasks. Combining tremendous amounts of data with AI allows us to surface critical next best actions to employees guiding them through best practices.? It is like having a mentor by your side teaching you all the things you didn’t know, right when you need to know them.? A standout example is our collaboration with Document Crunch. We're delivering crucial contract details to employees, perhaps while they're drafting a change order or even while they're processing a pay application and they have the opportunity to reduce the amount of retainage held due to how much billing has already occurred.? This just-in-time learning methodology enhances their efficiency and effectiveness and allows us to ramp new workforce at rapid speeds.??

Technology and Innovation Fuel Growth Opportunities

Lastly, innovation and technology present enormous growth opportunities within modern companies. Employees generally enjoy their work environments and want to stay. However, a lack of growth opportunities can prompt them to leave. Therefore, businesses need to continually grow, create new roles, and venture into new markets. Technology can be leveraged as a pathway for employees to undertake new roles or projects, solve business pain points, or help the company penetrate new markets.

The tech coming out today, and even that which has been around for the last 5 to 7 years, is beginning to significantly shape the future construction workforce. Our future generations of builders want to leave their mark on the built world around us and they are keen to innovate.? Putting great tools in their hands that allow them to learn faster, become more efficient and focus on solving difficult problems will lead to an effective and engaged workforce.
