The Techno Optimist

Those of you who know me, may have noticed that I have started using the moniker The Techno Optimist.

The last few years have been hard. Pandemic, civil unrest, wildfires, flooding, and war. Uncertainty, fear, anger, mistrust, and conflict all around. It is easy to forget there are good things happening in the world too.

The World Economic Forum , had a post recently on a robotic exoskeleton helping kids with disabilities learn to walk . Lex Fridman , did a podcast on how Google DeepMind trained AI to control nuclear fusion . A group of researchers including Jongyoon Han , at MIT developed a new water desalinization method that can be run off solar power.

Technologies like data and analytics, cloud computing, machine learning and AI, robotics, and automation are driving innovation in a broad array of disciplines. ?Advancements in areas such as medicine, biology, cognitive sciences, energy, climate science, food and water security, space exploration, and materials science, have the power to make the world a better place.

Hence, I’ve chosen to adopt a Techno Optimist perspective. Now I’m not na?ve. I don’t believe technology is a panacea for all of humanity’s challenges. It’s a tool. And how people orient their understanding, use, and measurement of the value of technology is a critical factor in whether it makes the world a better place or not.

But I need hope that we can make the world a better place. And if the focus of our consciousness determines our reality , as postulated by some quantum physicists, then I choose to focus on optimism. To share how technology enables and empowers peoples’ ingenuity, creativity, and collaboration to address both business needs and larger societal issues.

Arianna Huffington had a post on The Great Resignation being driven by people’s desire for ?greater sense of purpose and meaning in their work. Are you asking yourself why do I do what I do? Is it just to make money? Or is there some deeper meaning? A larger purpose?

I know I am. And I’d like to join with like-minded people to create a community focused on inspiring hope in our ability to address humanity’s challenges. I imagine some will accuse me of Techwashing . All I can say is that my intention is to facilitate knowledge sharing, constructive debate about the issues and potential solutions, and to motivate action to make the world a better place.

If you feel similar (including those I did not specifically tag), lets join together. Let’s Inspire…

  • Optimism in our future
  • Meaning in our work
  • And Purpose in our community

My ask of you is

  • Follow the hashtag #techforgood and post examples of how technology can address larger societal issues. I'm using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as my framework of reference.

  • Keep posts focused on the potential value to humanity not us as individuals or our organizations. It's about bringing positivity into LinkedIn feeds not selling products or services.
  • When someone posts a #techforgood example, don't just like it. Click the See More button, and add a Comment with at least 5 words preferably within the first 2 hours of the post. According to research by Richard van der Blom based on the engagement of your test group 2 hours after posting, the LinkedIn algorithm will boost or devalue your post. Getting people to click the See More button and Comments are weighted higher than Likes.
  • Comment on my article and share my ask with your networks so we can reach more like-minded people.

I hope you will join me. And together we can make the world a better place.

In Gratitude,

Dan

Dan, this is an inspiring post. Who does not desire more optimism in the world, meaning in our work or even a community of purpose through the good use of technology. After all, technology is supposed to make our lives better, right? According to quantum theory, the act of observation collapses the wave function into a particle that can be measured. karin Lehmann says, “Much of how you navigate through life is determined by what you focus on.” Therefore let us put our attention of the positive.a As a professional who has spent over two decades in the technology space, I believe that creative collaboration is where technology should be focusing. Working on projects independently can limit the amount of feedback you would receive during the creative process, leaving out other perspectives. Accomplishing shared goals using pioneering technology for the betterment of humanity is an innovative way to move forward.
