During one of my stints, an organization was coming up with a major expansion & our product was to play a major role. Hence, they called up the 04 major players of the industry to check whether one of us could fulfill their requirement.
When they called up the first team for discussion they asked 02 technical questions & then the questions went on to the ongoing one day series with Sri Lanka & so on. With the second team again they asked 02 questions & there after the discussion went on to the ongoing & upcoming movies. With the third team again it was 02 technical questions & thereafter it was discussion on local traffic & climatic conditions. When we entered for the discussion we too were introduced with the panel (Director-Technical, Director-Commercial, Project Head & Product Head).Thereafter started the question/answer session….One, two, three & so on. At times we had to call upon our Plant Manager to get the answer & at times our product manager also gave the answers to the questions. After half an hour, we got under the impression as if the panel had already made up their mind to outcast us from the project & hence, were asking us such detailed questions which weren’t asked to any of our competitor friends. With due regard to the jury, I dared to ask,”Sir, with due respect, can I ask a question?”?
Our other friends from the industry were asked only 02 questions & thereafter the Q&A turned down to ongoing ODI matches/Film Industry/Traffic & climate in the city, but with us it’s all technical questions?
To this the Technical Director replied, those guys couldn’t reply to our two questions, how could we then ask them the third question. We were confident about your team & hence, all the questions on you. Even if you didn’t know the answer you picked up the phone & got the answers for us. The job was done & the jury was happy & the tender(TDS) was made such that the order came to us.
I visited the site almost after 05 years along with my colleague for a different organization, as our money was stuck for almost two years of my then present organization after completion of work due to few snag work. Once we reached the Office the Director-Commercial immediately recognized me & asked the reason for my visit. We told him that I joined the Company recently & since a major chunk of amount was stuck in the project, I had come to resolve the issue as the region was under me.

Trusting me, he went out of the way & assured to get the funds released within a week from our visit & I on my part assured him to complete all the snag work related to the project in a month’s time, which we did.
Hence, the product knowledge, your efforts to service the customer & delivering on your commitment gives you long term benefit.
