#1 Technique Is Not The Only Problem

Yes, I know.?I know very well that technique is not the?only?problem when trying to succeed with product development.?Many other things can also go wrong, like incomprehensible managers, academic project leaders, leaving quality assurance until too late, negligence to capture requirements from users, and so forth. When I first planned to write my book about product development, I focused on describing these aspects of product development.

So I started to write about the typical soft and overhead prerequisites on product development. To write about a topic, in my head, is, to begin with, the fundamentals, and out from that, build up a model, higher and higher above the fundamentals. I tried hard to define what management would be needed, how to conduct a successful project, how to ensure not to include poor quality into the emerging product, etc, etc. But I got a feeling of stepping out on a quagmire. My descriptions found not enough load-bearing ground; whatever I tried to describe was to build a house on a swamp.

Okay, I thought, let’s spend some days defining solid cornerstones on which to base the product development model. And I did dig out the whole swamp to find and expose solid ground below. It was rewarding, for sure, but my book gradually changed focus, from overhead descriptions to basic foundations. And then I realized what product development suffers from – a solid, coherent, holistic, and exemplified “technical constitution.”

It was not new to me how hard it had been to describe a development model. I often had lengthy discussions, spent hours arguing, and finally ended up back on square zero because it wasn’t possible to share the basics with others. Everybody was discussing from their perception of reality, and it never happened that you shared anything.

So that changed my author’s mission; somebody had to take the time and effort to settle the foundation for product development. For example,?Cpdm?contains more than 280 explanations of almost all expressions and concepts that come across when approaching product development. Join me to use extensive and consistent definitions to understand and share the world of product development.
