Technical competence will only get you so far...

Technical competence will only get you so far...

A key challenge I see people making as they advance in their careers is spending too much time perfecting their technical specialism and not enough time developing their behavioural skills.

?I’m talking about emotional intelligence, relationship building, communications, conflict resolution and decision making…

?You need to find a balance between developing a healthy mix of technical and people skills.?

?Too much technical focus, you might struggle with collaboration, buy-ins and career growth. Too much people focus, you might struggle with strategic decision making and understanding how you can best help your team and peers.

?Take a pause today and think about

  • Have you been neglecting to develop your people/behavioural skills?
  • What people/behavioural skills do you want to strengthen??

?This includes a key behavioural skill which is setting and maintaining clear boundaries, and not let little things get in the way of your success.

?I’m talking about the little things that you put up with or pretend that it isn’t there.?

?Things like

  • Having unresolved conflicts and choosing to skirt around the elephant in the room
  • Unclear expectations and afraid of asking for clarification so you hope you’re doing the right things
  • Attending excessive meetings without questioning the purpose?
  • Procrastinating and having unfinished projects but deep down knowing you will never complete it?

?While it might seem insignificant, these little things are adding stress to your life and getting in the way of you getting what you want.?

?Each little toleration takes up unnecessary energy and time. When you add up all your tolerations, it becomes significant.?

?That time and energy are better spent living a fuller life and achieving what you want.?

?It’s time to take action. As part of developing your people and behavioural skills, start with making a little of all your little toleration and ask yourself - how can I remove it??

?If you want to dive deeper into this topic, come join me at this year’s EmERGe Leadership Summit.

I'm thrilled to be a part of Seramount's biannual summit devoted to employee resource groups (ERGs).

?My workshop, Reinventing Career Advancement Holistically, will focus on how you can design an existing and fulfilling career, all the while having fun!?

?Looking forward to seeing you there!

?Yours confidently,
