Silicon Valley doesn't have a monopoly on innovation. Here's a look at startups, emerging industries, and deals elsewhere in the US and the world.
The Los Angeles metro area has recently seen two $1B+ startup exits: Dollar Shave Club and Snap, which recently saw the largest IPO of a US-based tech company since Facebook's. It's also home to unicorn startups such as home products startup The Honest Company; Age of Learning, an ed tech company; and Procore Technologies, which makes construction management software. Well-known VC firm Upfront Ventures came out of the Los Angeles area. There were over 85 deals to VC-backed companies in LA in the last year. Here are 5 of the largest. Hyperloop One raised an $80M Series B from investors including Khosla Ventures, GE Ventures, and Sherpa Capital.
- Survios, a VR-based gaming environment, raised a $50M Series C. Felicis Ventures and Shasta Ventures took part in the round.
- CrownPeak Technology, a website management software solution, raised a $50M Series D from K1 Capital.
- GOAT, a marketplace for collectible sneakers, raised a $25M Series B from investors including Accel Partners, Matrix Partners, and Upfront Ventures.
- Docupace Technologies, provider of electronic processing platforms for financial institutions, raised a $16.5M Series A from Palisades Ventures and TVC Capital.
