As a fervent champion of technological advancements, especially AI, I acknowledge its potential to revolutionize our world. Yet, I can’t help but ponder if our existing technologies - planes, trains, automobiles, and the internet, designed to gift us more time, have paradoxically stolen it instead. In a simpler time, when a single TV channel and radio station were our only sources of entertainment, we seemed to have more moments to spare for ourselves and our dear ones.
My main apprehension is that while colossal corporations are pouring resources into AI and quantum computing, we might be overlooking the present in our sprint towards the future. Can we genuinely construct a future while ignoring the present? Are these organizations catering to their existing clientele, or are they solely fixated on prospective customers? This question extends to their approach towards their workforce as well.
Indeed, mental health concerns are escalating, particularly among the younger generations who are the primary targets of these hefty investments by large organizations. My ten-year tenure in the banking sector has revealed that our elderly population is the most impacted. As every institution vies for their wealth, we have failed to offer them the support they deserve. It’s disconcerting to witness our seniors’ becoming casualties of this technological onslaught.
While a significant number of seniors are adept at using technology, the problem arises when they err and find no one to guide them. Hence, as we welcome the future, we must not lose sight of the present. We need to ensure that our existing customers and employees feel appreciated and supported, and that our seniors are not left stranded in this technological marathon.
