The tech-visionary augmentation framework

Recently, more and more people, overall young talents or professionals looking for a transition, asked me the 1 Million dollar question:

what should I focus on if I want to become successful, work in an exciting field, and earn good money?

It seems the majority of people nowadays are hunting unicorns, but since I am a dreamer and also a doer, I thought it would be helpful to design a framework representative of my thoughts on how to make a dream come true. I called this the "Tech-visionary Augmentation Framework", because it assumes technology as the enabler to succeed in the future. Below is the framework representation.

Do you speak English? You better do, (probably it is so, if you are reading this), but if you don't, you have fond your Saint Graal. You NEED to learn English. If you are not there yet, you won't go anywhere, my friend, so get down to business and close this gap now. English is easy and is an incredible enabler. It connects you with people, gives you access to knowledge, academic education, enhances traveling, and is now a mandatory requirement for a serious managerial/entrepreneurial job. When you are good with English, don't feel too special, 13% of the world speaks English, but feel proud of yourself, you are one step closer to success.

This is your last chance, you take the blue pill, the story ends; you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

If you took the red pill, welcome to the Matrix, you are ready to become a Geek. Few years ago tech-geeks were bullied and confined, now, the geekiest are head-hunted and paid in seven figures. As you probably know, geeks like to specialise on emergent things, overall tech oriented, they were there from the origin (proof below).

There are a bunch of different areas I believe to be still usefully trending in the job market. If you follow one of them, your passion can become easily re-sellable (assuming you learn how to behave in an interview). If we look at all the areas in the white circle we can identify four different personas: the architect, the programmer, the designer and the scientist. Each of the persona can then focus on one specific area, from data, to systems, to blockchain, from ML to NLP, to analytics, from mechanical engineering to robotics, from Software development to ethical hacking, from UI design to 3D and additive manufacturing. Master one of these and you are a Nerd, two a Specialist (gets in you in the job market), three you are an Expert and start to see some money. Four? You just gained the Guru title, people will follow you on YouTube without understanding a single word of what you are saying. Anything above that, the geek community will basically start to raise altars in your name, you will receive anonymous bitcoins donation on your portfolio and will have a wonderful life.

Remaining in the white circe, consolidating your technical expertise will probably be enough to grant you a good job, also well paid if you climbed up the geek ranks. But if you want to make the difference and aim for a C-level job path, or do your own thing and start the fabulous journey of entrepreneurship, you gotta move to the orange circle. These areas will grant you the business acumen to move towards a more cross-horizontal use of your skills or an hyper vertical specialisation that a handfull has. You want to become a CTO? You need to do Business Administration (get yourself a good MBA). Fintech founder? Finance is the way. A Layer specialised into AI ethical matters, study law and in few years time you'll drive Lambos and do consultancies from your Yacht. Leadership capabilities will grant you the natural advantage in doing anything you want, run large organisations, a specialised unit, or your own venture. When you master one of the arts of the orange circle, and you have the white circle skillset flowing in your blood, then congratulations, you are on the path of the Innovator. You will do great things in your life, please do stay on the bright side and make the world a better place for everybody. At this stage, you won't have problem to find a very well paid job or find investors sponsoring your venture. Some of you will probably reach the mythological seven figures.

But what if you want to take it to the next level? What if you aim to change the world? or colonise TOI-700-d? Do you remember when your grandma was telling you that you needed to become a doctor? She was damn right, you should have listened to her, now you are in trouble, you are too old, chubby and lazy, the time for 11 years of medical school is gone! I am joking, you are still in time and it's NEVER TOO LATE to claim your white vest, go and do it! In fact, in my framework, the visionaries look back inwards to humanity, the flesh, the mind and all in between, rather than outwards. Why is that? because for a better future, we need better humans, more resilient, more intelligent, with super powers, with natural immunity to the COVID-19 and a shield against all the media bullshit. I have identified 4 areas that marry well with what you've seen in the white circle: Biotechnology, Prosthetics, Neurology and Genetics.

Some of the most dedicated humans will combine parts of the white and green and become amazing lab experts, researchers and scientists. Some of them are already out there researching the cure for cancer, and to them all my admiration. But is not enough to learn technology and apply it to one of the green fields, you risk to become underpaid and overworked. You need to become a specialist in one of the green areas. A technologist that becomes a neurosurgeon is paid in houses. But if you combine elements of the three rings, you definitely are a Visionary, like very few in the whole world. You have in your hands the ability to create and manipulate something that doesn't exist yet, that people don't know is needed, that will save and/or improve lives, that will inspire millions of people and make our planet a place where to stay.

Now you know the path, chose your way and show the world what you can do. I am vetting for you, new Visionary, everybody is...

I really like this Alessio Garofalo, EMBA, a challenge for my kids just about to embark on this journey, and a greater challenge for those of us who didn’t become ‘doctors’ to make sure we are still pushing that revolution. Oh, and always take the red pill!! #futureofwork #cognitiveautomation
