Tech Unemployment Drops and Job Listing Rise as the IT Industry Continues Its Recovery

According to the latest job report compiled by CompTIA, tech industry unemployment fell to 2.5%, down from 2.8% last month and the tech sector specifically grew by over 2,100 jobs last month.

Interest in tech workers seems to be rebounding following a significant decline in recent months. In May, there were 209,000 new job postings for tech occupations, marking a month-over-month increase of 27,000 and the highest number of new job postings since June 2023. Additionally, this surge in new job postings included a rise in remote work opportunities, with top remote job postings increasing to 34,245, a rise of 5,000 posts compared to the previous month.

“This month’s job report shows that tech companies are once again looking to grow their workforce,” said Matt Milano , President of Motion Recruitment . “With an unemployment rate still well below the national average, the IT industry has continued to show its resiliency and economic strength in the U.S.”

The demand for AI workers remains on the mind of the entire tech community, along with hiring managers across the US, as the number of job postings for AI occupations or positions needing AI skills accounted for 12% of all tech openings.

It wasn’t all good news for the tech industry, as the overall number of people working in tech across the entire United States economy dropped by 42,000 this month. However, the IT sector remains strong with the total number of tech occupation employment staying around 6.4 million workers.

Unsurprisingly, California was the state with the most tech job postings this month with over 21,000, but Texas was right behind with 20,189 and was the state that had the biggest monthly change in May. With a continued influx of government jobs hitting the market, Washington D.C. was the city that saw the highest amount of new tech job postings at 13,710, with New York City taking second with just over 12,000 jobs.
