Tech Trek: AI Unleashed - Event Recap + Pictures!

On June 26, 2024, ALPFA Boston proudly hosted its sold-out AI event at Google, titled “Tech Trek: AI Unleashed.” Organized by the STEAM Committee (formerly the Technology Committee), this groundbreaking event marked ALPFA Boston’s inaugural AI gathering. Google graciously hosted the event at their offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The evening kicked off with a networking session, featuring food and drinks, which facilitated informal interactions among the enthusiastic attendees. Andrea Fernandez, Director of the STEAM Committee, extended a warm welcome to everyone. Following this, ALPFA Boston President, Natalia Hilton, took the stage to emphasize ALPFA’s mission to empower Latinos. Andrea then introduced the event moderator, Rosemary Lopez, setting the stage for an engaging discussion on artificial intelligence.

The esteemed panel included:

• Claritza N. Abreu , Head of the Northeast Technical Team at Google and a respected community leader.
• Juan Baez , a visionary in the robotics industry and co-founder and COO of InsideOut Therapeutics, which focuses on merging technology with mental wellness.
• Louvere Walker-Hannon , Senior Team Lead at MathWorks, who provides expert technical guidance and strategic direction on implementing AI and data science workflows.
• Alfredo Alvarez Lamela , founder of Cross of the South Development, which is dedicated to enhancing language learning through AI.

This diverse panel explored the impact of AI on job roles, ethical considerations, future trends, and ongoing projects. The panelists provided insights on fostering business adoption of AI and encouraged job seekers to explore AI career paths. To aid those new to AI concepts, Rosemary integrated common definitions on slides throughout the discussion.

The session concluded with a dynamic Q&A, where attendees engaged with the panelists using an interactive audience tool, adding an innovative touch to the event. The evening ended with a final networking session, allowing attendees to connect with the panelists, as well as other professionals, students, and AI enthusiasts.

As a special token of appreciation, each speaker received a gift, contributing to the celebratory atmosphere of the evening. The STEAM Committee has planned another exciting event later this year for those who missed this one!
