Tech and Trauma: Insights from Action Trauma Conference

Tech and Trauma: Insights from Action Trauma Conference

What a mammoth month June has been and will be going forward!

With 2 big conferences Action Trauma and the All Tech Is Human I have lot to share.

This newsletter comes after an amazingly busy stand at the Action Trauma Conference, Belfast.

Firstly we're absolutely exhausted from standing for two days and non-stop talking, as the interest for technology and trauma was overwhelming! (much more than anticipated which has been such a lovely response)

Some of the attendee's visiting my stand included comments such as:

"I cant believe this topic is not more mainstream, and that no one is talking about this stuff today."
"This stuff is so important"

Highlights I realised:

  • There is a hunger to understand more about #cybertrauma, the impact of online harms, and the numbers of people - mainly children subjected to this type of online harm.
  • And, also the hunger for using technology for trauma is the most exciting part - where we showcased: Spirit VR Zengence?
  • Heart Math Software (HRV) ?

Books too heavy?

VIRTUAL REALITY GAMES FOR TRAUMA COMPETITION!

Have you ever wondered how mindfulness and VR can be used in therapy?

I demo'd Spirit VR - the mindfulness experience at Action Trauma.

If you attended, you might have seen me on the stand wearing one. For those that didn't catch the QR code for the Spirit VR - here's the sign up page to get a discount on Spirit VR!

What you get is:

  • a monthly fee to purchase a VR headset with SPIRIT VR
  • the support of the team for either 6 or 12 months (helping you use it in your practice and keeping you updated with software)- at a very reasonable rate.
  • And, for those that already have headsets, have a chat with Spirit VR directly using the link to sign up and we will send them your details.

"Spirit VR is a creative and immersive experience of mindfulness that can enable those who find mediating difficult to find a new way to engage with this process. The graphics enable users to interact with mindfulness in a way that audio versions currently do not. This application is a wonderful way to bring the mind and body together in one experience and makes this easy for beginners and experienced meditators alike.” Cath Knibbs

I am giving away a free copy of Zengence - a VR headset based game based on an ORB -? where you need to hum (if you saw Stephen Porges talk about polyvagel music you'll know what I mean).

Zengence is available in the Meta Game Store, and available for Meta Quest 2 and VR headsets.

All you need to do if you'd like to win one is.... sign up to show your interest on my Spirit VR page here:

I'm giving away this?copy away to?one of you using?a random generator!

More highlights from Action Trauma

It was lovely to see there were talks about the biology of trauma with some great speakers in the space and some newer faces too!?With Rachel Yehuda speaking about epigenetics and methylation once again- the words that got me started, in this space of trauma impact?at the cellular level as a?functional health practitioner.?

These?conversions at my stand with various professionals, Therapists, Doctors and other practitioners, police, social workers and more, around trauma included:

  • Epigenetic Tests
  • Nutrigenomics
  • Epigenome Testing

Also lots of conversations about the testing and support that I use with clients which was a last moment decision to include the functional health side of technology as part of my exhibition, and I'm so glad I did!!

This even resulted in a number of conversations where we are looking at the impact of trauma and testing it around lots of interventions = Hooray for SCIENCE!

Other highlights from the Belfast summit:?

It was wonderful to meet an attendee all the way from New Zealand who's daughter had seen my videos on TikTok and showed them to her Mum. So Mum said "Oh you're from the TikTok videos" - we had a selfie?so that she could send it to her daughter (saying look; she met the woman from TikTok that said parents shouldn't ban gaming or phones!)

Also,?I met a lady who introduced herself as she had read my first book 'Children Technology and Healthy Development (with Routledge). The back story is that she was anti-tech at first because of fear of all of the "problems" ...until she read the first book. The book actually helped her to understand tech and now has some good boundaries and great conversations with her 8 year old around technology. Rather than a blanket 'no' to things she was unsure of.

This is the reason for the books if ever I could showcase it!

Parents video?on LinkedIn

The big question all parents are concerned about right now... If you let them use social media too early, could it harm them?

If you leave it too late, will they feel left out or excluded by their friends? The decision is an individual one, but here's a few things to consider in this video.? Feel free to share this with any?parents that might find it useful.

Thanks for the article. It is always great when you can come away with so much interest in a topic close to your heart. And knowing that people are learning something and asking great questions. Thanks for all you are doing in this space.

What a deeply interesting path your post led me on this morning. Particularly regarding the interactions of methylation and dopamine signaling and its relationship to our online behaviors.
