Tech Tip #51: Read This Before Doing That Update!

We at CTTS recommend keeping your devices (computers and mobile devices) updated with the latest security updates to protect them. However, sometimes something catastrophic happens during an update that renders the device unusable. To prevent this from happening, here are a few things to do before you update.

  1. Back up your device.
  2. Verify passwords. With the integration of fingerprint scanners, sometimes it’s easy to forget that those fingerprints are tied to a password. Many OS’s require the password when doing updates. Make sure you have the password, the encryption password, and any cloud passwords correct before updating.
  3. Check to make sure the power cable is securely connected and you are using a battery backup if it’s a computer. Loss of power during an update or upgrade can cause the device to become unusable and can result in data loss.

With these three steps, you can relax – you’re protected in case the update does not go smoothly.
