Tech Talk Session 26, Hybrid STATCOMs, A Cost-Effective Way Of Extending the Range of Your STATCOM

Grid code compliance often dictates the requirement for dynamic voltage support, a requirement that can be met with a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM). STATCOMs are power electronic devices that inject reactive current into the network to control voltage. The current is out-out-phase with the voltage and therefore behaves like an inductor or a capacitor to either “buck” or “boost” the system voltage.

STATCOMs are fast and granular in control, meaning they quickly and precisely inject the necessary reactive current into the network to control voltage, enabling renewable (wind and solar) power developers to meet their dynamic voltage support requirements. But, like all other dynamic voltage support devices (synchronous condensers, static var compensators (SVCs), synchronous generators/motors, etc.), STATCOMs are expensive. And so any opportunity to increase cost efficiency in the project and engineering design is even more beneficial.

In this tech talk, NEPSI is pleased to host Timothy Freiberg, a network planning and applications engineer at AMSC to discuss grid code compliance and how NEPSI’s metal-enclosed reactive power solutions can be utilized to increase the operating range of AMSC’s DVAR STATCOM. Tim will be discussing grid code compliance and the benefits of using mechanically switched capacitor banks, harmonic filter banks, and shunt reactor banks to economically extend the operating range of STATCOMs to reduce overall project cost.
