Cybersecurity Corner: What is Microsoft Secure Score, and do you know yours?

Credit Microsoft

We know in today's ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape, staying vigilant is paramount. This week's Cybersecurity Corner focuses on a valuable tool readily available to many organizations utilising Microsoft 365: Microsoft Secure Score.

What is Microsoft Secure Score?

Think of it as a report card for your organization's cybersecurity posture. Microsoft Secure Score analyses your Microsoft 365 configuration, user behaviour, and other security-related settings, translating them into a numerical score. A higher score indicates a stronger security posture, meaning you've implemented more recommended security controls.

Why Should You Care About Your Secure Score?

Here's why understanding and improving your Microsoft Secure Score is crucial:

  • Proactive Defence:?A high Secure Score reflects a lower risk of cyberattacks. By addressing security gaps identified by the score, you proactively strengthen your defences.
  • Benchmarking and Visibility:?Compare your score with industry averages to gauge your relative security posture. This valuable benchmark allows you to identify areas for improvement.
  • Prioritization and Efficiency:?Secure Score prioritizes recommendations based on potential impact. This helps you focus on the most critical areas to enhance security efficiently.
  • Improved User Education:?The score highlights areas where user behaviour can be improved, allowing you to target user education initiatives effectively.

So, How Do You Find Your Microsoft Secure Score?

For administrators with the necessary permissions, accessing your Secure Score is a breeze. Simply head over to the Microsoft 365 Defender portal or the Microsoft Security Centre. There, you'll find your score along with detailed insights and actionable recommendations.

Don't have administrative access? Don't fret! You can ask your IT Admin or MSP to provide you access or a report and remember you can still play a vital role in enhancing your organization's cybersecurity posture.

Here's what you can do:

  • Be Phishing Aware:?Always be cautious of suspicious emails and links. Report any potential phishing attempts to your IT department.
  • Strong Passwords & MFA:?Utilize strong and unique passwords for all your work accounts. Consider enabling Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for an additional layer of security.
  • Stay Informed:?Keep yourself updated on emerging cybersecurity threats and best practices.

Remember, cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. By understanding and improving your Microsoft Secure Score, combined with individual vigilance, you can significantly contribute to your organization's robust cybersecurity defence.

MSP Spotlight : MSPs and Remote Workforce Support: Navigating the New Normal

The move towards remote and hybrid work setups has been a major change in today's workplaces. Managed Service Providers (MSPs) play a key role in helping businesses adapt to this shift, providing essential assistance in dealing with the challenges of remote work. With my own MSP offices in Milton Keynes, London, and Cape Town, I have valuable firsthand knowledge of the opportunities and obstacles involved in managing remote teams.

Benefits of Remote Workforce Support:

  1. Flexibility and Scalability: Remote support allows businesses to scale their operations up or down without the constraints of physical office space.
  2. Access to Global Talent: Companies can tap into a broader talent pool, hiring the best candidates regardless of their geographical location.
  3. Cost Efficiency: Reduced overhead costs associated with physical offices can lead to significant savings for businesses.

Challenges in Managing Remote Teams:

  1. Communication and Collaboration: Ensuring effective communication and collaboration across different time zones and locations can be challenging.
  2. Cultural and Operational Integration: Creating a cohesive company culture and integrating operational processes across diverse geographical locations require deliberate strategies and tools.
  3. Security Concerns: Remote work can introduce new cybersecurity vulnerabilities, making robust security measures and employee training essential.

Our MSP's Experience:

At ?our MSP, with teams spread across Milton Keynes, London, and Cape Town, we've implemented several strategies to address these challenges:

  • Robust IT Infrastructure: We've invested in secure and reliable IT infrastructure that supports seamless collaboration and communication across our teams.
  • Regular Check-ins and Virtual Meetings: Frequent virtual meetings and check-ins help maintain team cohesion and ensure alignment on projects and goals.
  • Cybersecurity Training: Regular training sessions on cybersecurity best practices are conducted to ensure our team members are aware of and can mitigate potential risks.

The role of MSPs in supporting remote and hybrid work environments is more critical than ever. By providing the necessary technological infrastructure, security, and support, MSPs enable businesses to navigate the challenges and reap the benefits of remote work. Our experience across multiple offices has underscored the importance of adaptability, communication, and robust IT support in fostering a productive and secure remote workforce.
