How’re you doing? I must admit that my team and I have been moving at such a pace lately that I've only just found the time to write this newsletter. Moreover, it's not just DLabs.AI that's been bustling; the AI world seems just as exciting at the end of 2023 as it has been throughout the year.
Today, we'll revisit the drama you've probably heard about - the firing and even quicker return of Sam Altman to OpenAI, leaks about the so-called AGI, and everything we've figured out so far. I'll try to piece this story together, just in case you missed an episode of this saga.
Since our last newsletter, there have been other topics that I can't ignore, including Gemini by Google and the latest on the Artificial Intelligence Act. Given that we at DLabs.AI have also been working intensely, I'll share some insights from our work, too.

OpenAI's Leadership Rollercoaster
Have you been following the whirlwind events at OpenAI? The company recently experienced a tumultuous period involving CEO Sam Altman's firing and rehiring, all amidst the development of a mysterious AI model, Q*.?
Here's a breakdown of what happened:
The Unexpected Layoff. The turmoil started on November 17, when OpenAI's board announced that 38-year-old Sam Altman would be fired. Cited reasons were vague, revolving around Altman's lack of "consistent candor" in communications with the board, though no specific details of these trust breaches were shared. Adding to the upheaval, Greg Brockman, OpenAI's chair and president, also discovered his removal from the board. Brockman opted to resign despite being offered to stay, leading to Mira Murati's appointment as interim CEO.
A Ripple Effect of Reactions. The decision triggered a wave of responses inside and outside OpenAI. Employees and stakeholders were stunned, sparking intense discussions about the company's future; the unrest extended beyond the boardroom, impacting the entire organizational structure. OpenAI, originally a non-profit with a commercial subsidiary backed by major investors like Microsoft, plunged into uncertainty. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, revealed they were also caught off guard by the developments.
A Leadership Carousel. The drama then intensified over the weekend. Altman marked his brief exit with a symbolic photo at OpenAI's headquarters. Attempts at boardroom negotiations stumbled, leading to Emmett Shear, the former Twitch CEO, briefly stepping in as OpenAI's third CEO in days. In an unexpected twist, Microsoft roped in Altman and Brockman to spearhead a new AI research team, leaving their involvement with OpenAI in limbo.
Employee Revolt. By Monday, the discontent had reached a boiling point. In a bold move, many of OpenAI’s 770 employees threatened mass resignation unless Altman and Brockman were reinstated, challenging the board's competence and commitment.
The Return of Altman. Amidst this turmoil, a breakthrough occurred. On the Tuesday night, OpenAI announced an agreement for Altman's return, albeit with a reshaped board featuring Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and D'Angelo (notably, Altman didn't regain his board position).
The Enigma of Q*. As Altman returned to the helm, attention shifted to a possible catalyst for the initial upheaval, the development of Q*, a new AI model with unknown capabilities and potential implications.

The Q* Model: A Step Closer to AGI?
So, what do we know about Q*? According to sources, it's a new AI model with unknown capabilities and potential implications. This model, reportedly capable of solving fundamental math problems, represents a significant advancement in AI capabilities.
There are suggetions the model's breakthrough capabilities have raised concerns among OpenAI staff, who warned the board about its potential threat to humanity. And these warnings reportedly contributed to the initial decision to fire CEO Sam Altman.
AI experts have weighed in on Q*'s potential, acknowledging that its ability to reason logically and about abstract concepts marks a considerable leap from current AI models. Charles Higgins from Tromero highlighted the importance of symbolic reasoning in AI, a skill Q* seemingly possesses.?
Sophia Kalanovska, also from Tromero, suggested that Q* might combine deep-learning techniques with human-programmed rules, potentially addressing some current AI limitations, like hallucinations. The most interesting aspect is that the development of Q* has led to speculation about its role in the journey towards Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).?
The model's ability to combine experiential learning with factual reasoning is seen as a significant step closer to what is considered true intelligence. The ability of an AI to solve new, unseen problems, as Q* reportedly can, is a key milestone in the creation of AGI.?
This capability goes beyond mere regurgitation of existing knowledge, suggesting a more advanced level of AI understanding and application. However, despite the excitement, safety concerns have also been raised. Was a breakthrough just made in AI that could be a threat to humanity?
Recently, headlines suggested that Sam Altman had confirmed leaks about Q*, but did he really? In a recent interview, he avoided directly addressing Q* but emphasized the company's commitment to making AI progress safe and beneficial.
OpenAI has also not yet commented on the specific developments regarding Q*. However, Altman's recent statements and the company's focus on AI safety indicate a cautious approach to handling this breakthrough.?
You must admit we live in exciting times, and I, for one, am curious to see how Q* will evolve and what it means for the future of AI. This model could mark a crucial step towards developing more sophisticated, capable AI systems, potentially paving the way to the first AGI.?

AI Act: EU Reaches Landmark Agreement
In the wake of developments like OpenAI's Q* model, the urgency for comprehensive AI regulation has come sharply into focus.

While low-risk AI applications like spam filters will have minimal regulatory burdens, high-risk AI systems used in areas such as critical infrastructure and law enforcement will be subjected to stringent requirements.
The Act adopts a decisive stance on AI systems that present unacceptable risks. It proposes bans on AI that could manipulate human behavior or enable invasive practices like 'social scoring' by governments. Moreover, the Act advocates for transparency in AI usage, mandating the clear identification of AI systems in user interactions, particularly in the case of chatbots or deep fakes.
To enforce these regulations, the Act prescribes substantial fines for non-compliance, underscoring the weight given to these new rules. Additionally, it outlines specific regulations for general-purpose AI models, placing them under the scrutiny of a newly established European AI Office within the European Commission.?
The new office could become a global benchmark in AI regulation. Meanwhile, the AI Act is a pivotal movement toward ensuring that AI development and deployment are conducted responsibly and ethically, not just within Europe but on a global scale.?

Despite its success, the Gemini launch hasn’t been smooth sailing. A promotional video titled “Hands-on with Gemini: Interacting with multimodal AI” faced criticism for potentially overstating the AI's capabilities.?
