  • Braya Renewable Fuels LP Newfoundland refinery, formerly a petroleum facility, has commenced operations, converting soybean, corn, and animal fats into renewable diesel . With an initial capacity of 18,000 barrels, it aims to decarbonize challenging sectors like heavy industry and transportation, contributing to Canada's Clean Fuel Regulations for a 15% carbon intensity reduction by 2030.?
  • Canada plans to issue its second Canadian-dollar-denominated green bond under the updated Green Bond Framework, including certain nuclear energy expenditures. As part of Canada's commitment to being a global nuclear leader, this marks the first inclusion of such expenditures in a sovereign green bond. The green bonds, contributing to Canada's emissions reduction targets, will fund projects like green infrastructure and nature conservation, aligning with international best practices and investor preferences. Canada aims to unlock private financing and develop a robust sustainable finance market while meeting environmental goals.
  • The RBC Climate Action Institute's Climate Action 2024 report reveals that Canada may not meet its climate goals and calls for nearly doubling climate spending to achieve Net Zero by 2050. While acknowledging progress in areas like electric vehicle adoption, the report emphasizes the need for a significant increase in capital for the energy transition. Key findings include the federal government covering 80% of climate action costs since 2016, the importance of provinces increasing spending, and the potential for technology and affordable solutions to drive faster climate action. The report underscores the urgency of accelerating efforts for a sustainable future.
  • Halifax-based healthtech startup Myomar Molecular (co-founder & CEO - Rafaela Andrade ) has secured $1.1 million CAD in pre-seed funding to bring its muscle health monitoring device to market. The funding includes equity led by an undisclosed Nova Scotia angel investor, along with grant contributions from the Canadian and Nova Scotia governments. Myomar Molecular aims to address the often-overlooked segment of muscle health, offering a home-use test kit that includes a urine test and a software application for interpreting results.
  • Toronto-based legaltech startup Bench IQ (CEO - Jimoh Ovbiagele ) has raised $2.8 million CAD in pre-seed funding to scale its AI software, which provides insights into US federal judges' rulings. The funding round was co-led by Maple VC and Haystack, with participation from investors like Ironclad CEO Jason Boehmig and Applied Intuition CEO Qasar Younis. Bench IQ's platform focuses on US commercial bankruptcy law, and the founders aim to expand its coverage to other legal practice areas and state-level courts.
  • Montreal-based EdTech startup Tokidos has secured $1.35 million CAD in pre-seed funding for its screenless game console, PLAYCubes, designed to reduce children's screen time. The funding round included participation from Triptyq Capital, Investissement Québec, and Boreal Ventures, as well as angel investors such as Arcade1Up’s CTO Davin Sufer and former DART Aerospace VP Steve Ghaleb. Tokidos aims to launch PLAYCubes in September, offering a screen-free gaming experience for children.
