Tech Pack Tuesdays ? Slash your marketing budget

Most products are crap. They have to be. We’ve trained customers to expect a certain price (one that hasn’t risen with inflation like everything else). There’s no room in the margins to invest in design.

I’m a millennial, so before my time, there once were multiple size categories to fit different customers. Juniors, Misses, Petites. Stores offered alteration services. Product development, pattern making and sizing were forms of art done carefully by skilled tradespeople.

When I was 16 at fashion school, we had to disassemble and dissect items of clothing to learn about garment construction (mid 2000’s this was). The teachers told us to only buy vintage for the assignment, newly made stuff was not up to scratch.

And this was BEFORE the arrival of fast fashion. After that, sliding standards just disappeared all together. Fashion became a race. “Mid range” just dissolved into the mass market segment of being as cheap as possible.

But what happens, is that when you make flavourless, disposable and cookie cutter products... You have to SELL a lot harder.
