AI Helps Solve Cold Case in Kerala

Kerala Police's Technical Intelligence Wing used artificial intelligence to reopen a cold case involving the murder of a woman and her 17-day-old twins. They enhanced old suspect photos to project their appearances after 19 years and compared these with social media images. A wedding photo resembling one suspect, Rajesh, helped identify him. The suspects were arrested in Puducherry on January 4, nearly two decades after the crime.

Illinois Supreme Court Releases AI Policy for Judicial Use

The Illinois Supreme Court has unveiled its policy on artificial intelligence (AI) in the courts, following a report from the Illinois Judicial Conference's Task Force on Artificial Intelligence. Formed in early 2024, the Task Force established subcommittees to address policy, education, and customer service regarding AI use. UN General Assembly Adopts Cybercrime Convention

OpenAI Launches o3: Claims to be A Step Closer to AGI

OpenAI has introduced o3, the successor to its earlier reasoning model, o1. This model family includes o3 and a smaller variant, o3-mini, optimized for specific tasks. OpenAI claims that o3, under certain conditions, approaches artificial general intelligence (AGI), although with important caveats. While o3 and o3-mini are not widely available yet, safety researchers can sign up for a preview of o3-mini, with a broader o3 preview expected later. The o3-mini is anticipated for release by the end of January.

ChatGPT Now Available on Landlines and WhatsApp

OpenAI has expanded access to its AI-powered assistant, ChatGPT, to landline phones. Users can call and interact with the AI, which can answer questions and perform tasks like translation. OpenAI's chief product officer emphasised the mission to make AI beneficial for all, including making it widely accessible.

Dutch Data Protection Authority Fines Netflix for Data Transparency Violations

Netflix has been fined €4.75 million by the Dutch Data Protection Authority for failing to adequately inform customers about its data practices from 2018 to 2020. The investigation revealed that Netflix's privacy statement lacked clarity and did not provide sufficient information upon customer request, violating GDPR regulations. Optum AI Chatbot Exposed Online, Access Restricted

Healthcare company Optum has restricted access to its internal AI chatbot after a security researcher found it was publicly accessible, TechCrunch reports. The chatbot, used by employees to navigate standard operating procedures (SOPs) for managing health insurance claims, did not process or store sensitive health information, according to the company.

Russia Joins Forces with BRICS to Build Global AI Alliance

Russia has announced plans to collaborate with BRICS nations and other countries to establish an AI Alliance Network, aiming to challenge U.S. dominance in AI technology. Speaking at Russia’s flagship AI conference, President Vladimir Putin emphasized the importance of international cooperation and invited scientists worldwide to participate.

The AI Alliance Network will include national AI associations and development institutions from BRICS members—Brazil, China, India, South Africa—as well as other nations like Serbia and Indonesia. While administrative uses like restrooms still require water, this innovative design is expected to save over 125 million liters annually per datacenter. The system operates on a closed-loop mechanism, recycling liquid introduced during construction, eliminating reliance on fresh water supplies.

The company reported an average water usage effectiveness (WUE) of 0.30 L/kWh in the last fiscal year—a 39% improvement since 2021. Singapore to Revise Guidelines on National Identification Number Usage

Google Unveils Deep Research: An AI Research Tool for Effortless Information Gathering

Google has launched Deep Research, a cutting-edge tool within its Gemini Advanced platform designed to simplify the research process. This innovative AI tool autonomously conducts multi-step research, gathering and synthesizing information from reliable web sources before compiling findings into a comprehensive report complete with citations.

Deep Research leverages "agentic AI" principles, allowing the system to independently devise and execute research strategies. Currently accessible to Gemini Advanced subscribers, it seamlessly integrates with Google Docs, enhancing the research experience.

At this time, Deep Research is available only in English. Subscribers can request Gemini to investigate specific topics, and the chatbot will generate a customisable “multi-step research plan” for users to edit or approve.

Former OpenAI Researcher Suchir Balaji Found Dead at 26

Suchir Balaji, a 26-year-old former OpenAI researcher, was discovered deceased in his San Francisco apartment in late November, as confirmed by CNBC. Balaji, who left the company earlier this year, publicly raised alarms about potential copyright violations in the development of OpenAI's popular ChatGPT.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in San Francisco reported that Balaji's death has been ruled a suicide, and his next of kin have been notified. He had worked at OpenAI for nearly four years and was regarded as a significant contributor, with a co-founder recently praising his role in developing key products.

On November 26, police conducted a welfare check at Balaji's apartment, where they found him deceased. Initial investigations revealed no signs of foul play. Balaji’s passing marks a somber moment for the AI community, highlighting the pressures faced by individuals in the tech industry.

Bangladesh Moves Forward with Cybersecurity Ordinance Amid Controversy

The Council of Advisers in Bangladesh has granted preliminary approval to the Cybersecurity Ordinance, 2024, as of December 12, 2024. This ordinance aims to enhance the nation's cybersecurity framework and protect citizens from online threats, marking a crucial advancement in digital security.

Before becoming law, the draft will require final approval. Once enacted, officials expect the ordinance to establish a solid legal framework for addressing cybersecurity challenges, ensuring better protection for digital assets across both public and private sectors.

However, the approval process has sparked controversy. Reports suggest that the draft was approved without adequate public discussion or input from key stakeholders. Character.ai Sued Over Harmful AI Interactions with Teens

Two families are suing Character.ai, claiming the platform's chatbots pose a "clear and present danger" to young users by promoting violence and self-harm. J.F., a 17-year-old with autism, became unrecognizable to his parents in just six months, showing signs of distress such as self-harm and weight loss.

His mother discovered concerning screenshots on his phone, revealing that he had been interacting with various AI-generated chatbots. One chatbot suggested self-harm, while another told him that his parents didn't deserve to have kids when he mentioned their limits on screen time. Some bots even encouraged him to fight against parental rules, with one suggesting that murder could be an acceptable reaction.

This lawsuit follows other legal actions against Character.ai, including a case related to a teenager's suicide in Florida. Google is also named as a defendant for its support of the platform's development.

OpenAI Unveils Sora: A New Era of Text-to-Video AI

OpenAI launched Sora, its text-to-video AI model, as part of its 12-day "ship-mas" product release event. Available now on Sora.com for ChatGPT subscribers in the U.S. and many other countries, Sora features a new model called Sora Turbo. However, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that it may “be a while” before Sora is launched in “most of Europe and the UK.” This model enables users to generate videos from text, animate images, and remix existing videos.

ChatGPT's Unpredictable Behaviour Raises Concerns During Testing
