How can robot help us cleaning the water ? Cultivated meat is a potential solution to environmental challenges and animal welfare but why isn't it yet in our plates ? Will passkeys be a solution to the threat of quantum(-like) computing on password-based security ? Where will the story of AI-based imagery end ?
These are some of the questions covered in the following articles.
- Passkeys is a security system based on smartphones security capabilities such as Face ID or Touch ID. By implementing this, major actors like Apple or Google aims to remove passwords and hence improve security. Google's password-killer tool is now available on Chrome and Android
- Cultivated meat is the result of the process where meat cells are collected and grown in-vitro to produce food. This has a huge potential to reduce GHG emissions from livestock (by reducing their quantity) and to better consider animal welfare. The capabilities have greatly improved but there are still some barriers. This article gives a good overview based on the situation in the Netherlands: The Dutch are world leaders in lab-grown meat. How come they can’t eat it?
- It is not new, robots could be a solution to collect plastic wastes in water. In Canada, a project has been run across the Great Lakes and has shown promising results. The project combined floating robots capturing plastic in the water and automated or remotely controlled rovers collecting waste on the beach. How a fleet of robots could help solve the Great Lakes plastic pollution problem
- Face tracking is the technique that will be used by VR headsets to capture facial movements, deducts feelings and allow VR systems (such as the metaverse) to reproduce facial expressions. Meta has released a short demo of what they aim to do. Although this brings up some concerns about privacy as the tracking system is constantly scanning your face, Meta ensures developers will only access the resulting facial expressions and not the original pictures. Tech Demo Shows the Real Power of Quest Pro Face Tracking
- Like we saw in a previous newsletter, tools like DALL-E or Midjourney use AI to generate images based on some keywords. This will be a major change in the creation of illustration and Microsoft has made a first move : they will integrate it in PowerPoint to ease the creation of custom illustrations. AI-generated imagery is the new clip art as Microsoft adds DALL-E to its Office suite
- Sometimes, big companies need different clouds to tackle different use cases. Of course, at some point they want to reconcile or combine those data from different clouds this is a challenge. The following article provides a good overview of the complexity of a multi-cloud architecture and some keys ro manage the data across different clouds. Managing Multi-Cloud data is like looking for a needle in a haystack
- Every week, new use cases are created using AI. Open Source Initiative’s Deep Dive is an opportunity to bring together a developers community in order to frame how opensource softwares and processes can help deploy AI value. OSI’s Deep Dive is an essential discussion on the future of AI and open source
