英飞凌 has officially commenced production at its largest power chip factory?in Kulim, Malaysia. This facility, set to become the world’s largest silicon carbide (SiC)?plant, is expected to reach full operational capacity within the next five years. The company's investment in Kulim underscores Malaysia's significance as Infineon's largest chip manufacturing base in Asia, and it also houses the company’s largest global chip packaging and assembly operations.
Ng Kok Tiong, Senior Vice President and Managing Director at Infineon Kulim, highlighted that the company employs around 15,000 people in Malaysia, making it the largest workforce of any Infineon location worldwide, including its headquarters in Germany.
As a market leader in power and microcontroller (MCU) chips, Infineon is advancing the development of wide-bandgap semiconductors, particularly those based on SiC and gallium nitride (GaN). These cutting-edge materials are crucial for applications in renewable energy, electric vehicles (EVs), and AI-driven data centers, areas where demand for electrification solutions is rapidly growing.
Raj Kumar, Senior Vice President of Technology and R&D at Infineon Kulim, emphasized the advantages of SiC technology, stating, "Compared to silicon-based power solutions, SiC allows us to double the power density in the same footprint or achieve the same power output with half the size."
Infineon projects that revenue from SiC-related solutions will reach at least €600 million ($656 million) in fiscal year 2024, ending in September.
To further enhance its production capabilities, Infineon plans to invest an additional €5 billion in the second phase of the Kulim plant’s expansion. This development is supported by €1 billion in prepayments from customers and approximately €5 billion in design win commitments, reflecting strong market demand for Infineon’s SiC technology.
