Tech-Life Balance: Navigating the Digital Awareness Era
Have you ever been talking to someone when suddenly your phone makes a noise? That familiar ping, beep, or vibrating sound coming from your phone? If you have, you're not alone.
Many of us have experienced this interruption, and it's worth taking a moment to consider how it affects our conversations. Finding a good balance between using technology and enjoying our personal lives is important. It means using technology wisely so that it helps us without taking over our lives completely.
Nowadays, technology is a big part of our lives. We use it for many things like work, shopping, staying in touch with friends, and even keeping track of our kids. With our smartphones, we can do lots of things like reading news, checking emails, watching TV, listening to music, and making calls anytime and anywhere. It helps us communicate instantly, find information easily, and get things done quickly. While it brings numerous benefits, it also has drawbacks if not managed properly.
According to the 2023 Life and Technology Report published by duke+mir, (https://www.dukemir.com/research) 70 percent of respondents from the UAE feel that it has become harder to separate their work and personal life due to technology since 2020. Almost half of the Emiratis, which is 48 percent, admit to spending too much time on their phones and express a desire to cut back on usage. Similarly, a considerable number of Arab Expats (48 percent), Westerners (38 percent), and Asian expats (36 percent) also express a desire to reduce their phone usage. Jonathan Ivan-Duke, Co-founder, and Partner at duke+mir, commented on the findings, stating, “People in the UAE are finding it very difficult to balance how they use technology, whether that is at work, at home, or while spending time with friends and family. We are prioritizing using our phones ahead of people sitting right in front of us. This data shows we need to develop better ways to control our use of technology and perhaps learn to enjoy face-to-face interactions more.”
What if we are told that by using technology purposefully and mindfully, we could reduce stress, improve our wellbeing and sleep, increase our focus and productivity, and experience better relationships? Yes, it is true. ?In the book " Tech-Life Balance: 101 Ways to Thrive in a Digital World" by Taíno Bendz, founder of the international challenge 'Phone Free Day,' you'll learn how to recognize your unhealthy tech habits and make small changes that make a big difference. Over the years, I've discovered several helpful tips that have made a difference in managing my technology use. A little bit of self-discipline is more than enough. First and foremost, I have made a habit that no phones between 9 PM and 8 AM. While these strategies may require consistent practice and adaptation, they have proven to be effective in promoting a healthier relationship with technology for me
