Tech jobs at Meta & OpenAI for 30 cents per hour! Sign up to train AI.
Hey there, fellow tech enthusiasts! Normally, I'm all jazzed up to chat about the latest and greatest in AI, from self-driving cars to chatbots that can whip up a sonnet as easily as a smoothie. But today, I've got to put on my serious hat for a moment. ??
You see, I stumbled upon something that's got me scratching my head about all this talk about AI ETHICS and feeling a bit blue. Picture this: major tech companies like Meta , OpenAI , the ones building those multi-billion-dollar industries we all admire, are relying on folks who make around 30 cents an hour. Yep, you read that right, less than the price of a gumball! Now, these tech giants are quick to rally around AI, to "slow it down" the progress of AI, depending on the weather or how much money they can keep from this next big boom (Ahem, Elon Musk with X secretly building an AI company while telling everyone to slow down... I guess). They're all about empowering small to mid-size businesses to scale up using open-source goodies like LLAMA2 and other LLM's. But when it comes to joining forces with the government to talk about fair wages for the people behind the scenes, well, suddenly everyone's gone quiet.
The AI Tech Documentary You Need to Watch
I recently watched a documentary that pulled back the curtain on this issue, and let me tell you, it's not for the faint of heart. It's like finding out your favorite superhero wears mismatched socks. It's a side of AI that's hidden away, where desperate people all over the world are exploited for their labor.
Artificial intelligence is doing some snazzy stuff, no doubt about it. From intelligent assistants that can find your lost keys to content recommendation engines that know you better than your grandma, AI is transforming industries left and right. But let's not forget the unsung heroes, the invisible human workforce doing the nitty-gritty work that makes all this magic possible. As we stand at the precipice of an AI revolution that will reshape and disrupt every sector, we must urgently confront this question: how can we balance rapid technological progress with ethical labor practices that respect human rights, welfare and dignity?
The Critical Role of Underpaid Data Labelers
A common narrative is that AI systems will inevitably render human workers obsolete. But the reality is that humans play an indispensable role in developing accurate and efficient AI through extensive data labeling, content moderation, completing surveys and other manual tasks. AI is not magic or fully autonomous - it relies heavily on human-led training.
Companies like Facebook , eBay , GIPHY , Etsy , Twitter , FigureEight, 亚马逊 , 西门子 , Adobe , Appen, iMerit, Telus International and more employ hundreds of thousands of low-wage data labelers around the world. These workers draw boxes around objects in images, transcribe audio clips, moderate disturbing content, provide feedback on AI-generated media and more - highly tedious tasks that are vital for training machine learning algorithms.
Without this extensive human collaboration, systems like self-driving cars would never be able to function safely. Voice assistants like Siri would not understand speech. Content recommendation engines would fail. Yet these workers remain in the shadows, even as their labor powers innovation at tech giants making billions. Known as “ghost workers,” these data labelers can make as little as 30 cents to $1-2 per hour doing repetitive tasks for 10+ hours daily without benefits. They feel like an expendable, invisible workforce even as their work enables breakthroughs at companies like OpenAI, Meta, Waymo, and leading AI startups. Outsourcing to regular people to expand their training data.
A recent example is OpenAI using underpaid Kenyan data labelers to develop toxicity filters for ChatGPT. These workers earned just $1.32 per hour labeling disturbing racist, violent, and sexual content to train AI - deeply traumatizing work. Their mental health and dignity were the hidden cost of ChatGPT’s success. Such stories are all too common in the AI industry.
The Severe Toll of Content Moderation
In particular, content moderators who review violent, graphic material to keep online platforms safe face severe mental health impacts with little organizational support. Moderating platforms like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Meta require viewing thousands of traumatic videos, images, conspiracy theories and hate speech daily. Many poor moderators report developing PTSD, anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts from over-exposure to the worst of human depravity online. Some describe being haunted by the horrific content they review and having to numb themselves emotionally to cope, which is really sad. The scale of moderation required by major tech platforms makes it inevitable that outsourcing this hazardous job to low-wage workers in the Global South has become standard practice.
Imagine being in a classroom, but instead of teaching eager young minds about history or math, you're teaching a computer how to recognize hate speech, violence, or even what a cat looks like. Sounds simple, right? These AI trainers, often working for a few bucks an hour, sift through the darkest corners of the internet. They're the ones labeling data, categorizing images, and moderating content. They're the human brains behind the machine brains, helping AI understand what's what. These folks are exposed to some of the most disturbing content you can imagine. They're the gatekeepers, making sure that the AI doesn't learn from the wrong stuff. And all that exposure? It takes a toll, both mentally and emotionally. And why do they do it? To teach AI. To make sure that when you ask your virtual assistant about the weather, it doesn't respond with something from a horror movie. They're the ones making sure that AI understands human language, human emotions, and human values. All this hard work, all this emotional labor, and it's often done without proper support, without fair pay, and without recognition. These AI trainers are like the backstage crew of a big Broadway show, making everything run smoothly but rarely getting a bow.
Unsettling Truths About the AI Industry
The reality of extensive reliance on underpaid and overworked ghost workers reveals some unsettling truths about the AI sector. It exposes the sector’s rampant hypocrisy. Tech firms boast of developing a utopian, work-free future while simultaneously exploiting masses of underpaid laborers. They praise automation while quietly relying on cheap human workforces. It reveals AI’s lack of magic or full autonomy. The wizard behind the curtain is still human - AI ‘genius’ is manufactured through endless hours of rote human labor. These workers’ contributions are deepest at the lowest levels of the tech hierarchy.
All this exposes the lack of oversight and regulation around ethical AI development. In the race to dominate AI commercially, ethics and rights are often an afterthought unless public outrage forces change.
The Incentives Driving Unethical Practices
What incentivizes the tech industry's unethical practices? Several key factors are at play: Venture capital funding environments that prioritize rapid growth and profitability over human rights. Investors pour billions into AI startups with no questions asked.
Competition for talent. Top AI researchers are in high demand, commanding millions in compensation. Far less focus is placed on the low-level workers actually training the AI. The ease of outsourcing labor digitally to low-income regions where workers are willing to accept lower wages. Lack of transparency and oversight into AI development chains. Ghost work can be readily hidden.
Apathy from the public, who are drawn to the shiny promises of AI. The nascent nature of the industry, still forming its norms and standards. Meaningful progress will require reshaping the incentive structures that perpetuate unethical practices in the first place.

Building an Ethical Future for Responsible AI
As AI promises to disrupt even white-collar industries like finance and law, prioritizing ethical practices is urgent and essential. We have a collective responsibility to ensure human welfare, equity and dignity are not sacrificed at the altar of technological advancement and corporate profits.
Some potential solutions I think should be:
Fair Pay and Snazzy Benefits: You know those content moderators and data labelers? They're the rockstars behind AI, and it's high time they got the VIP treatment. Fair pay, mental health support, and benefits that make you go "Wow!" Let's make it happen, folks!
Carrots for the Good Guys: Hey, if a company's treating its people right, let's throw them a parade! Or at least some tax breaks and subsidies. A little incentive never hurt anyone, right?
Peek Behind the Curtain: What's going on back there in the AI development world? Let's pull back the curtain and make sure everyone's playing by the rules. Transparency's the name of the game, my friends.
Power to the People: Unionize, organize, and make some noise! Workers deserve a say, and collective action's the way to do it. It's like a team huddle for fairness. This is exactly why the WGA and SAG/AFTRA are on strike againts low wage work AND artificial intelligence!
High-Five the Watchdogs: Those non-profits keeping an eye on the AI industry? They're the referees in this game, and they need our support. Let's cheer them on! Heck it makes me want to become a founder of such an organization. Who is with me? Anyone even reading this? Lets partner up and do it! Message me.
Spread the Word: Let's get everyone in on the conversation. The more people know about the human side of AI, the more they'll care. Knowledge is power, and sharing is caring! Spread this article, repost!
Laws with Teeth: We need rules that bite, not just bark. Protect those ghost workers and whistleblowers, and let's make sure justice isn't just a word in the dictionary. All this talk about AI regulations, and ethics yet there is no talk about this topic? This is what made me scratch my head!
Vote with Your Wallet: If a company's acting like @3340les, let's give 'em the cold shoulder. Boycotts speak louder than words, especially when they hit the bottom line.
Humanity First, Profits Later: Let's not forget what's really important here. People, compassion, creativity – that's the gold at the end of the tech rainbow.
So the roadmap to an AI future that doesn't just sparkle but actually does some good. It's a wild ride, but hey, we're all in this together. Let's roll up our sleeves, squeeze the best out of this opportunity, and make sure the future of AI is as bright, fair, and fabulous as we know it can be because if we don't do it, guess what, Artificial SUPER intelligence will probably do it for us. Be ready because that is coming soon too!
