???Top AI companies visit the White House to make ‘voluntary’ safety commitments
While substantive AI legislation may still be years away, the industry is moving at light speed and many — including the White House — are worried that it may get carried away. So the Biden administration has collected “voluntary commitments” from seven of the biggest AI developers to pursue shared safety and transparency goals ahead of a planned executive order.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon are the companies taking part in this non-binding agreement, and will send representatives to the White House to meet with President Biden today.
Here’s the list of attendees at the White House gig:
Brad Smith, President, Microsoft
Kent Walker, President, Google
Dario Amodei, CEO, Anthropic
Mustafa Suleyman, CEO, Inflection AI
Nick Clegg, President, Meta
Greg Brockman, President, OpenAI
Adam Selipsky, CEO, Amazon Web Services
The seven companies (and likely others that didn’t get the red carpet treatment but will want to ride along) have committed to the following, among other things;

?? Google says Apple employee found a zero-day but did not report it
Google fixed a zero-day in Chrome that was found by an Apple employee, according to comments in the official bug report. While the bug itself is not newsworthy, the circumstances of how this bug was found and reported to Google are, to say the least, peculiar.
According to a Google employee, the bug was originally found by an Apple employee who was participating in hacking competition in March. But that Apple employee did not immediately report the bug, which at the time was a zero-day — meaning Google wasn’t aware of the bug and no patch had been issued yet.?
The bug was instead reported by someone else who also participated in the competition, didn’t actually find the bug themselves and wasn’t even on the team that found the bug.
?? Not good for business? Meta's threads is mobile only
There is no denying that we do more with our mobile phones than ever, yet there is still much that is better with a monitor and full-sized QWERTY keyboard and mouse.?
Though shopping, browsing and otherwise interacting with a business is fine via a handheld device, the actual content creation is still better from a desktop/laptop.
That could explain why Instagram's Threads may struggle to attract true business users. Threads, which launched earlier this month and promises to have the potential to take on Twitter in the social media broadcast space, is a mobile-only platform.?
Users can only make posts, write comments and follow others via a mobile app, unlike Twitter, which allows users to engage from a website.
According to a new report from B2B Reviews, which surveyed more than 400 business owners, 15% of respondents already had a Threads account, while nearly half (47%) said they had plans to make one in the future. However, almost the same number (45%) said that the platform being mobile-only was its biggest disadvantage.
?? Netflix quarterly revenue misses forecasts, shares slide
Streaming video pioneer Netflix disappointed Wall Street on Wednesday with second-quarter revenue that fell short of analyst estimates, sending shares tumbling nearly 9% in after-hours trading.
The revenue figure, along with a weaker-than-expected forecast for revenue in the third quarter, overshadowed the addition of 5.9 million new streaming customers from April through June and earnings that easily topped predictions.
Netflix has been looking for new ways to make money as streaming competition intensifies and it nears market saturation in the United States. The company launched a cheaper tier with advertising last November, and started asking password borrowers to pay in a widespread crackdown that rolled out in May.
