Toyota slashes EV production amid slowing sales

NHK | English | News

Toyota Motor has reduced its 2026 global electric vehicle production target by about a third, now planning to produce around 1 million EVs instead of the original goal of 1.5 million. The company will include plug-in hybrids in this target as demand for those models is expected to increase. This decision comes amid a broader review of EV strategies by automakers due to declining demand in Europe and the US. Volvo Cars has recently abandoned its plan to transition to only electric vehicles by 2030, and Mercedes-Benz has indicated a postponement of its strategy to make all new vehicles electric by the same year.

Gov't to issue legislative notice for new EV safety regulations

Yonhap | English | News

The South Korean transport ministry will issue a legislative notice for new electric vehicle (EV) safety regulations in response to public concerns over EV fires. The notice will be available for 40 days, from September 10 to October 21. The government has accelerated the implementation of its EV battery certification system, set to begin trial in October instead of February, requiring companies to disclose detailed battery information. The ministry aims to enhance transparency and safety in the EV sector.

POSCO Future M scales back investments amid EV glut

Korea Times | English | News

POSCO Future M is scaling back its investments due to a prolonged downturn in the rechargeable battery industry linked to reduced global demand for electric vehicles (EVs). The company has delayed and cancelled major projects, including a joint precursor factory in Pohang with China's Huayou Cobalt, initially planned for a 1.2 trillion won investment. Although some analysts suggest U.S. policy changes regarding China influenced this decision, POSCO stated uncertain profitability as the primary reason. In addition, POSCO Future M sold its 51% stake in P&O Chemical to OCI to concentrate on producing cathode and anode materials. There are concerns that a planned 500 billion won anode materials plant in Pohang may also be scrapped, although no final decision has been made. The capacity utilisation of its existing anode materials plant has decreased significantly, and the firm's sales forecast for cathode materials has been reduced, leading to a cut in capital expenditures. These developments appear to contrast with POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa's previous assertions that the company would continue investing in battery materials as part of its transition to EVs.

Companies that were doing well in non-Chinese electric vehicle markets are experiencing negative growth this year

ZD Net Korea | Local Language | News

From January to July 2023, major electric vehicle manufacturers excluding China, such as Tesla, Volkswagen, Hyundai Motor Group, and Stellantis, experienced negative sales growth, according to SNE Research. Tesla maintained its top position in sales, but saw a 7.1% decrease overall, with Europe experiencing a 12.2% decline and North America an 8.3% drop. Volkswagen Group reported a 0.5% sales decrease, mainly affected by sluggish performance of its ID models. Hyundai Motor Group's sales fell by 4.7%, attributed to lower sales of the Ioniq 5 and EV6. The European market showed a mere 1.6% growth and faced declines for Tesla and Stellantis, while BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Geely recorded positive growth. North America achieved a 9.3% growth, primarily due to increased sales from Hyundai and Stellantis despite Tesla's downturn. In Asia (excluding China), sales surged by 67.9% and 91.8%, with significant contributions from Chinese firms like BYD and SAIC, and Toyota showing 90.8% growth driven by a successful PHEV launch. Despite efforts to restrict Chinese electric vehicles in the US and Europe, sales of these vehicles continued to rise, prompting discussions on the effectiveness of tariff policies.
