Tech Hiring Rebounds: Latest Jobs Report Shows Significant Gains, Unemployment Decreases

The tech industry experienced significant growth last month, with 118,000 new positions added across the U.S. economy, according to CompTIA ’s most recent Tech Jobs Report. This surge in job creation accompanied a sharp decline in the tech unemployment rate, which dropped to 2.5%—almost a full percentage point lower than the previous month and well below the national average of 4.1%.

In a departure from the recent downturns, both overall tech employment and jobs within the tech industry saw growth in September, adding more than 8,500 new positions. The biggest gains were in cloud infrastructure, data processing, and hosting services, which collectively added more than 6,000 jobs in September compared to August. Currently, over 6.4 million people are employed in core tech roles across various industries.

“Tech unemployment is on the decline, and IT job postings have increased for the second consecutive month. These numbers indicate that top employers are looking to expand their tech workforce heading into 2025,” said Matt Milano , President of Motion Recruitment . “Those in the IT industry can’t be complacent in either their hiring process or job search, as success in the new year will depend on taking a proactive approach to the job market."

Tech job postings increased in September, reaching around 516,000 active openings, including 225,000 new listings. Job postings for tech support specialists grew by over 10%, while listings for software developers and engineers saw a rise of 2,075 positions.

However, remote job postings continued to fall, with only 38,661 open tech roles allowing for fully remote work. Data scientists saw the biggest drop in raw numbers. Database administrators and network architects were the only two job titles that saw increases in fully remote roles posted.

“It was never really a question of if, but when employers were going to resume hiring,” Tim Herbert, chief research officer, CompTIA said in a press release. “A broad mix of companies viewed recent economic developments as the green light to move forward in addressing their tech talent needs.”

Washington, DC continues to lead as the metro area with the highest number of job postings, followed by New York City. Dallas, Boston, and Atlanta round out the top five cities with the most posted, though Boston saw the largest month-over-month increase in job postings, with 22% more roles posted in September.
