In the last 12–18 months, technology has been used for both good and bad. These robots, such as Hanson Robotics' Sophia, are capable of efficiently communicating with natural language and using facial expressions to convey human like emotions. This technology has the potential to be used for both good and bad, depending on how it is used.

Additionally, they have been used to help with heavy labor, such as carrying hefty objects, and to overcome human physical limits. Humanoid robots with artificial intelligence have also been used to facilitate deep sea mining, and to help address labor shortages in Japan.

The potential long-term social and environmental impacts of humanoid robots with artificial intelligence are wide-ranging. AI based machines have the potential to significantly improve our quality of life in areas as education and even at home. AI can also help reduce the effects of the climate crisis, such as in smart grid design, developing low emission infrastructure, and modelling. However, AI can also threaten human autonomy, agency, and capabilities.
