Recently, I joined a committee with diverse leadership styles. We were all colleagues once under the same management. Some of us adopted our former boss' practices while some complete despised it.
Being friends, naturally, there is also a lot of emotions involved. We came together for the same cause but at times there were disagreements. Even alarmingly, there were some who simply chose to agree in order to preserve the friendship.
We all came to a consensus that we should agree to disagree and remind ourselves that we should always maintain professional relations.
During these times, I find that there are at least three main roles in the committee: The Leader, The Communicator and The Differing Voice.
The Differing Voice gives alternative views and provokes thoughts from others. His views are usually the best as its unusual but at times misconstrued.
That's when The Communicator comes in to paraphrase whatever that was being said in order to make everyone understand each other's views. He also counterchecks the justification for such views.
The Leader has to remain neutral and always base his decisions on the best interest of the organisation. At the same time, while delivering his decision, he has to be tactful and not authoritative.
The bottom line is, if everyone plays their role well, pause and reflect, the team will definitely move more effectively.
