TeamViewer: A Double-Edged Sword

TeamViewer: A Double-Edged Sword

The human element has consistently proven to be the most frequent and dangerous threat to the security of organizations. Every day, employees make errors—whether out of carelessness or ignorance—that can bring down entire companies. While these mistakes are sometimes shrugged off, the statistics are no laughing matter.

According to Verizon's 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report, a staggering 68% of data breaches involved a "non-malicious human element," such as human error or falling victim to social engineering. This alarming figure highlights how serious the issue is, yet too often, it is met with jokes or indifference.

One such incident underscores this danger: In June 2023, a lawyer from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, admitted to using the computer system of his former law firm to track his ex-partner’s business activities. While the story may seem trivial at first, it’s a serious breach of trust and security.

Attorney Justin L. Scott was officially censured by the New Jersey Supreme Court on May 31, 2023. After leaving the firm in 2019, a forensic investigation revealed that Scott accessed the firm's computer system six times using remote access software—TeamViewer. This program allowed Scott to view applications on the laptop and monitor calendars.

Scott initially claimed that his access was accidental and that the program was installed by the firm’s IT department for remote work purposes. However, he later admitted that his actions were intentional.

TeamViewer: A Double-Edged Sword

TeamViewer, a widely-used remote access software, has become a vital tool for businesses, enabling employees to work remotely, collaborate, and offer technical support. While it has many advantages, it also poses serious risks if not properly managed.

Ignorance: A Blind Spot

One of the biggest security threats is ignorance, which can manifest in several ways:

  • Lack of employee training: When staff are unaware of basic cybersecurity practices, they can unintentionally expose systems to vulnerabilities.
  • Neglecting security priorities: Companies that fail to invest in proper security measures leave their systems open to attack.
  • Cultural complacency: Some organizations foster a culture where security threats are ignored, or even laughed off, rather than addressed seriously.

The Importance of Endpoint Security

Endpoint security, which focuses on protecting individual devices like laptops and mobile phones, is a critical aspect of cybersecurity. Without robust protection, these devices become entry points for attackers, putting entire networks at risk.

To combat these threats, organizations need proper training and resources. SIGMA offers high-quality programs that equip teams with the necessary knowledge and skills to address these challenges effectively. Learn more about their offerings here: SIGMA Training.
