Be the Teammate Who Fuels the Fire, Not the One Who Puts It Out

There’s something powerful about being part of a team that’s on fire. The kind where you can feel the momentum building, where every person is bringing energy, solutions, and drive to push the business forward. Even in virtual meetings, you can sense it, that electricity in the air when a team is in sync, working towards a shared goal.

But just as momentum can be built, it can also be slowed. And one of the fastest ways to kill progress is to have a teammate who focuses only on problems without bringing solutions.

The Difference Between Energy Boosters and Energy Drainers

I’ve been fortunate to work with leaders and teammates who show up every day ready to move the business forward. My current sales manager is a great example. He takes ownership of whatever needs to get done, jumps in wherever he’s needed, and never lets ego get in the way of learning something new. He has years of experience and a track record of results, but instead of getting stuck in “this is how we’ve always done it” thinking, he adapts, adjusts, and brings fresh energy to the table.

The result? The team thrives.

There’s an unspoken confidence that if we hit a roadblock, we’ll figure it out, because that’s what we do.

But we’ve all seen the opposite, too. The teammate who only points out issues but never offers a way forward. The one who shows up to meetings with nothing but criticism, expecting someone else to fix things. The one who drains energy instead of creating it.

That kind of attitude doesn’t just slow down problem-solving, it drains the team’s motivation.

The Best Teammates Are Built in the Trenches

Great teammates aren’t the ones who just show up when things are easy. They’re the ones who bring clarity, confidence, and solutions when things are messy.

  • They take ownership instead of waiting for someone else to step in.
  • They ask good questions that drive the team toward better solutions.
  • They stay coachable, no matter how much experience they have.
  • They adapt quickly, instead of digging in when things change.
  • They elevate the room, bringing energy instead of draining it.

These aren’t just good traits to have, they’re what make the difference between a team that thrives and a team that stalls out.

Mindset Matters More Than Skillset

You can teach someone technical skills. You can train them on a new process. But you can’t teach someone to care.

The best teammates don’t just have experience, they have the mindset of a problem-solver. They refuse to sit back and let things break. They step in, find solutions, and move forward.

This is the kind of mindset that creates leaders at every level. You don’t need a title to be someone who pushes the business forward. You just need to show up with the right energy, take accountability, and be the teammate that people trust to get things done.

Are You an Energy Giver or an Energy Drainer?

Every workplace has problem-finders and problem-solvers.

So, ask yourself:

When you show up to a meeting, are you bringing solutions, or just pointing out problems?

Are you lifting your team up or slowing them down?

Are you the kind of teammate people want to work with?

Because the truth is, your attitude sets the tone for everyone around you.
