Teaming up to Tackle Microplastic: Transparent Paper Bags and Air Pillows
Harnessing the power of creative and collaboration, delfort and Camm Solutions have teamed-up to provide the market with transparent paper bags and air pillows made from delfort paper and Camm's coating material. The new packaging solutions were reveled at this year's Fachpack, one of the main events in Europe for companies that produce and use packaging.
microplastic free coating
Many coatings applied to paper for functional purposes, such as providing barriers to moisture, grease, or oxygen, do contain microplastics. Papers with coatings that contain plastics can be difficult or impossible to recycle and contribute to environmental microplastic pollution.
Camm has developed a patented toxin and microplastic free coating material that blends natural fibers with advanced PVOH formulations. This coating has now been successfully applied to delfort's specialty paper packaging, as an alternative to conventional plastic packaging.
This new combination enables microplastics-free packaging solutions whose fibers can be recycled in the paper stream," says Nanda Bergstein , Managing Director at Camm Solutions. "A pioneering class of packaging is being created here and we are delighted to have found a partner in delfort who, like us, is interested in transforming the packaging industry. And that is through solutions that are easy to integrate into the packaging production process."
recyclable lightweight paper
According to some statistics, this year alone people will go through 5 trillion plastic bags - that's 160,000 a second. With as little as 1% - 10% of these bags being recycled, the others are incinerated or end up in the environment. The destructive impact of our over-reliance on plastic bags can be migrated with transparent paper bags.
delfort papers used for air pillows and for transparent packaging for bags are both recyclable according to the CEPI method and are made with fibers from sustainable forestry that come from FSC? (FSC-C109921) and/or PEFC (PEFC/06-33-163) certified sources. delfort has also joined the non-profit environmental organization Canopy, which aims to conserve forests through responsible fiber sourcing and to protect ancient and endangered forests and habitats of threatened and/or endangered species.
“We want to support our customers with fiber-based packaging that follows the principle of circularity" says Christopher Steger, CSO of delfort. "Our solutions offer high functionality, can be recycled in the paper stream, are particularly lightweight and save material.”
collaboration for smart solutions
Using delfort's thinwrap high transparency paper and Camm's microplastic free patented coating, high transparency bags can be made to protect and package a range of products such as books and magazines, electronics and clothing and accessories. Lightweight yet robust, the paper has a high grade of tension and tear resistance.
For the air pillows, delfort's thinbase lamination paper was combined with Camm's coating to make the pillows sealable an inflatable. The pillows serves as cushioning in shipping boxes and can withstand heavy loads of up to 50 kg, retains its shape and is as light as a feather.
