Teaming together, apart
Teaming together and apart, are now the same. Whether together or apart, the team’s relevance, quality of relationships and the results achieved, are of equal significance.
- Our very existence is dependent on how we stay, strive and succeed as part of a team. Teams are indispensable for two reasons:They are the predominant unit of organisational performance – nothing of meaning, value, and impact can be achieved without teaming.
- Given our relational and social human nature, our teams are our tribes. They are with whom we identify and to whom we turn. Our teams are where we belong.
Given the current circumstances, teaming apart presents both challenges and opportunities. How team members take care of each other and co-ordinate action together, are the primary responsibilities.
To harness the team's collective energy and collective determination, I invite you all to explore how the 5 Disciplines of a Smart Team could open new possibilities to add greater value to all your stakeholders.
Reflect on and share your insights to each of the following Disciplines:
Discipline #1: DISCOVER – team’s stakeholders’ mandate
- What is now different about the mandate the team's stakeholders have commissioned you with? What are your stakeholders looking to the team to step up to?
- Don’t assume you know the answers, test your understanding and seek clarity.
Discipline #2: DECLARE – team’s unifying purpose - why the team exists?
- What cause does the team serve greater than itself. What is the team for today, that it wasn't for yesterday?
- What value could you add that will benefit others for years to come?
Discipline #3: DESIGN – the agreed ways-of-working and engaging together, apart
- How, now teaming apart, do you need to change the way you engage and relate together?
- How do others want to think, feel and act after each interaction with you?
Discipline #4: DELIVER – the collective goals - achieved working interdependently
- What GREAT work are you now collectively called upon to commit to and deliver?
- What requests are important to make of others and what commitments are important you give to others, to achieve what is important get done?
Discipline #5: DEVELOP – to learn and evolve together
- What learning from today will be of greatest value for tomorrow? Share it.
- What today is important you commit to learn more about and to change?
Never has there been a time and such a need to be and bring your best as a leader. Now, is the time to rise-up to be a smart team and harness the collective fears, the collective energy and the collective determination.
Take care and stay well.
