Teaming

Teaming

Who would find this book useful?

Anyone who who works in a cross-functional environment, and finds it challenging to get the best out of their teams. Individuals who would be looking to adopt the mindsets and skill-sets for operating in roles and organizations that do not have fixed teams with clear objectives. An individual who wants to get themselves future ready irrespective of whichever industry they belong to, and equip themselves with an inside out perspective v/s outside in and feeling themselves to be a victim of circumstances

What's the main theme of the book?

Teaming is more than just forming teams. It's a dynamic process of continuously building and developing collaboration even as projects evolve and team members change. It emphasizes learning, adaptation, and flexibility in knowledge-driven organizations.

Key Concepts in the book!

Amy wonderfully covers, the definition of teaming (as compared to the definition of team), she explains well why and where we need it, and more importantly how to achieve it as well. The book covers a bunch of concepts but I'm going to highlight a top few which I found critical as well as easy to understand

  • The Process Knowledge Spectrum: At one end of the spectrum is high volume-repetitive work, and the other end id pioneering research and discovery. Understanding where your work lies on the Process Knowledge Spectrum helps you answer, What should be the focus of learning? What kind of learning is most required?
  • Teaming as a Foundation for Learning: Fundamentals, or base level includes the interpersonal actions and behaviours required to rapidly collaborate, adjust and learn, the next level is the leadership framework, and the the peak of the Pyramid, execution as learning represents a way of operating in which continuous systematic learning occurs in tandem with products or service delivery.
  • Practicing Execution as Learning: Structures in the execution which take care of learning in itself. Diagnose (assess the situation), Design (develop specific plan for action), Act (treat experience as experiment), Reflection (Evaluating results; What should we change?)

Actionable tools & techniques

  1. Four Pillars of Teams (Identifying and Practicing behaviours driving teaming success): (i) Speaking Up (ii) Collaboration (iii) Experimentation (iv) Reflection
  2. The Power of Framing Framing is a natural aspect of being a human and operating in complex reality. It's an automatic process that we do on a regular basis but are often unaware of. It's useful to understand some of the nuances of frames.
