Team Tuesdays with Cathy Moore

Team Tuesdays is back for another installment! This week we are featuring Employability and Careers Consultant Cathy Moore . Cathy joined the Department 6 years ago and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has also worked in Careers in the Further Education and secondary school sectors. Find out more about Cathy below.

What does a typical day look like for you (if there is one!)?

I guess it depends on the time of year! During term time, this might be a typical kind of day:

Checking emails on my mobile over breakfast... Teaching a few hours across Ulster Business School, Ulster Law School or School of Communication, Media and PR on our Belfast campus. Meeting an employer on campus to run a workshop with students. Reminding students of an upcoming job application deadline through a class shout-out. Meeting a student for 1-1 guidance. Calling an employer to advise them on the best way to recruit our students...Meeting a Course Director to plan a big student event...Answering more emails... Participating in a course revalidation planning meeting...Replying to a few more emails.. Tweaking my teaching notes for a new session the next day. Then I have a tendency to scroll through LinkedIn on my mobile on the sofa in the evenings!

What is the favourite part of your job?

Our students. They're brilliant! I really love meeting them as students, then as graduates and our future employers. I feel very privileged to be part of their career journey, helping in whatever way I can.

What do you feel are the benefits of engaging with the Employability and Careers team at Ulster University from an employer or student/graduate perspective?

We have a varied and wide range of experience with employers, students and graduates so can really help you to succeed in the next stage. And we will celebrate with you when you do succeed!

And finally.....How do you like to unwind after a busy week at work?

When I can get an extra day off then I’m away ??! I used to speak French and Italian fairly fluently so I’m always looking for cheap deals in those countries. If I wasn’t working in Careers I would definitely be in the travel industry.
