Team Success Starts With Individual Understanding

Understand THE Individual and WHAT Motivates them INDIVIDUALLY is the recipe for creating a highly performing and successful team.

But Surely There's More To It Than That ... Right?

I’m often asked the question “How Do I Motivate My Team?” which I usually respond with “How well do you know your team … at an individual level? at which point things go a little quiet, for a while anyway!

"How Do I Motivate My Team?"

Knowing each member of your team will almost give you a superpower like ability to really connect with them when you start to truly understand what inspires and motivates them to perform.

Have you noticed that a particular member of your team likes to decorate his or her workspace with plants, wall hangings, and relaxing photos and messages?

This is a huge indicator as to what drives them and if company policy is in favour of lean and clean workspaces, this will have an adverse effect on their overall performance and productivity.

What this team member is showing the world by setting up their preferred workspace is that their strongest internal driver (motivator) is one of Aesthetics and this value can often be viewed as unnecessary, unproductive or is just a complete waste of time by those not sharing the same level of appreciation.

The value placed on Aesthetics can be the difference between a worker being engaged and productive or distracted and unproductive.

If you’ve noticed that this person has started to perform to higher levels since working remotely, this will be due to them being surrounded by their own perceptions of form, symmetry, beauty, flow and balance.

Understanding and appreciation each individual and getting to know the internal drivers takes time. Time that's often not invested in conversations that lead to having that knowledge. All teams are made up of individuals and these individuals in a team must experience professional and personal growth through empowerment and strengthening from the team's leader. Just like a chain, the team is as strong as its weakest member.
