Team-led leadership
Nicholas McKie

During my 'Inspiring Leadership' podcast conversation with him, the former England Rugby Head Coach, Stuart Lancaster, describes leadership as being about balancing the need to keep control whilst also letting go. In order to create ownership and have an effective team he believes you need to go through the following process:
1. Culture
The first stage is to get the right people in the right positions to promote the values and behaviours you are looking for.
2. Identity
Connect to the history of the school or setting in which you are working. For older institutions there may well be a visible history to connect to, whilst in start-ups this is more about step 3.
3. Higher purpose
Look beyond targets and results to unpick your overall purpose. This can link to mission, culture and identity.
4. Behaviour and standards
Your higher purpose informs the requisite behaviours and standards of working.
5. Ownership
When everyone is aware of the culture (expected values and behaviours required) then ownership begins to develop
6. Leadership
Once ownership is in place you then have team-led leadership; this is the last piece in the jigsaw when every other stage has been activated. ?
How far are you down the line are you in relation to developing team-led leadership?
