THERE ARE NO "I's" IN TEAM!
Hi everyone, and welcome to my weekly blog on SALES LEADERSHIP – HOW TO BUILD A WORLD CLASS SALES TEAM. This week I will be discussing There are no I’s in team.
A few weeks back I discussed the difference between leaders and bosses. Experienced leaders know the value of their team. Leaders will put their team’s success in front of theirs. They know that if the team succeeds, everyone wins. In business, when talking about successes and/or failures, typically I say “we” more often than “I”.
Peter Drucker says, “The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I’. And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say ‘I’. They don’t think ‘I’. They think ‘we’; they think ‘team’. They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but ‘we’ gets the credit…. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done”.
A leader does not exist alone. ?He must have committed followers to implement a shared vision of a better future. For this reason, the leader’s focus must be on facilitating his or her team’s success–not on fulfilling their own personal ambition and glorification. Effective leaders serve their followers with the best interests of the enterprise always above their own. If you are focusing too much on your own needs, then you are not effectively leading your team!
Many organizations now have bonus programs which compensate everyone in an all or nothing scenario based on hitting the company quarterly or yearly KPI’s. Although I don’t necessarily agree with this scenario, it does promote teamwork across all departments of the organization.
When we look at ourselves in the mirror and reflect on our strengths and weaknesses, personally and professionally, the team model is used in almost all aspects of everyday life. Personally, if you are married, the success of your marriage depends on the commitment both individuals have to the relationship. In speaking for myself, my wife’s strengths are my weaknesses, and vice versa. We feed off each other’s strength to improve our relationship and our standard of life. Our motto is “BETTER TOGETHER”.
On a professional level, a team can be viewed in many ways:
·?????? An organization can view itself as a team or within the organization, each department can be considered a team. While there are individual KPI’s, most companies will also set KPI’s by department.
·?????? In sports there are teams such as football, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. But even in individual sports competitions, you will often here the athlete refer to their team in both success and weakness. Tiger Woods was one of the worlds greatest golfers, but when being interviewed, he will often refer to his team of trainers, coaches, doctors, caddy’s, etc.
·?????? In sales, I have always contributed my success to the team I was on. Individually we all offer various contributions, which in turn makes for the success or failure of the collective team.
