Team building in COVID. Are you still doing teambuilding activities or day-to-day work and COVID concerns getting the best of you?.
In these COVID circumstances, team building activities have taken a back seat and people may be losing their sense of belonging. It is important to let your team know that you are concerned and that productivity is sustained.
If in the past (before COVID) you had weekly or monthly team building activities and looked forward to your Friday Pizza or monthly birthday gathering under today's situation you may be feeling alone in the desert and completely losing that sense of being a part of something. But technology is on our side, now more than ever, and we can get it to good use. So here are a couple of suggestions for team building and a simple way of getting a quick take on your team's current situation:
- Smartphone Photography contest: How about a contest of photos from home or right outside things?. Where everyone can participate and it is an easy way of getting all involved. It could be of plants, maybe a Christmas tree, your view out your window, a dish. All participating can quickly vote on the most liked photo and you can ask the winner to explain why she or he took it and if it means something special.
- Play an online game: You can fall-back on UNO online and get a good time with your team. This will depend on how many team members you have but if there are too many you can switch to a 5 question game like "best movie ever". For the question game, you can revert back to your team and ask a couple of them why that particular movie is their favorite.
Finally, you need to know how is your team feeling:
- Are they engaged?
- Is morale high?
At the end of your activity, you can send a quick survey just making a simple question to help you get a thermometer of your team's situation:
- How was your week or day?
- Was this week better than the previous?
- Did you like the activity?
So, get creative with the activities and with the questions to get a sense of the team's morale. But definitely, you need to maintain these activities going and not let them on the back seat.
