Believe it or not, the idea for this status update came to me in a dream last night...a disturbing nightmare.
My team was heading in the wrong direction, putting on a performance for a trade show that was in terrible taste.
I expressed my opposition strongly and I was ostracized and excluded. The performance bombed.
Whether you're a team leader, team member, or external consultant, HOW you handle disagreement will make the difference between influencing the team to reconsider its plan or watching a disaster unfold.
It will also determine whether or not you maintain a positive and constructive relationship with team members.
1. Listen carefully to the ideas presented by the rest of the team.
People will not hear you until they have been heard.
Team leaders, to avoid Groupthink, fully explore dissenting viewpoints.
2. Identify aspects of the proposed plan that you feel WILL work.
3. Instead of dwelling on flaws, suggest 1 or 2 modifications or improvements.
4. Keep our cool. You can't bulldoze your way to agreement. Who takes a hothead seriously?
5. Present an alternative plan that includes aspects of the original proposed plan.
6. Pinpoint your concerns with information or data to back it up.
7. Volunteer to help in an area that can mitigate damages.
Brawta: If the initiative fails, NEVER say "I told you so." You'll ostracize your team.
Sometimes teams make the wrong decision. Few team decisions involve life and death scenarios. So, pick your battles. Don't blow up relationships just because an approach other than the one you advocate is selected.
