TEAM BUILDING: HOW TO FORM A TEAM? by S CHAKRABORTY

India is a nation of 1.5 billion with diverse religions, Caste, Creed, State, Races, Languages & sects and dialects. To differ is our birth right! We all agree to see things differently. Nation wise we are untied but perception-wise we are different. No two Indians will see eye to eye on any subject. We remain united by one word – India! We see this in the clubs, during elections, in the corporate board meetings and everywhere!

So are we a Team? No we are not but when the need arises we become a Team, be it a game of Cricket, War or anything that even touches the chord that holds us together.

So what is a Team?

Teams are groups of people that share a common purpose, to which they are all committed, and who are empowered to set goals, solve problems and make decisions.

Without these common traits they are not a 'team' - they are a group of people who happen to work together in the same environment - a work group.

Typically a team has five characteristics:

  1. Members of a Team are dependent upon each other for the completion of a complex task.
  2. Members possess different but complementary skill sets.
  3. Teams manage their work boundaries set by the party, sect, group or organisation.
  4. Teams have internal processes for managing communication, resolving conflict, solving problems, making decisions and reaching Goals.
  5. Teams are bounded and stable over time.

BENEFITS OF TEAMWORK

Effective teamwork has a number of benefits - to the organisation, to the team and, not least, to the individuals within the team.

The way that people work in teams is just as important as their individual performance.

This includes their capacity not only to work within their own team but also to have good inter-team relationships.  Working in such an environment helps build high staff morale and improved work performance.

In many organisations today we see a move towards flatter, leaner structures. Stripping out layers of management means that individuals have to be more willing to take on additional responsibility and accountability - achieved through team working.

Goal-Setting for Team Building: When team are equipped with goal setting skills, they feel more confident and perform at higher levels. Providing work-teams with the knowledge of how to set and achieve goals will also boost the morale of the team because it makes the team feel more empowered, more responsible, more in control. It turns an aspect of team leadership over to the team itself.

When a team or an individual understands how to apply set a goal and to proceed toward its accomplishment, the team or individual feels more positive and becomes much more efficient and productive.

Simply stated, applying the process of goal setting is a great way to get things done.

So, How do we Form Teams?

Forming a Team is easier said than done! Team effectiveness is not inevitable. Teams quite often fail to meet performance objectives and the consequences can be harsh and lasting. By carefully laying the groundwork you will greatly increase the likelihood that the Team you launch will deliver on its potential. Five critical components will help:

  1. Set Clear directions – Be specific & firm in directions!
  2. Build Organisational support – There must be a support system, if all fails!
  3. Create a Team structure that empowers members – Power of empowerment knows no bounds!
  4. Identify key relationships – It’s all about relationships and key – Roles & Responsibility!
  5. Monitor external factors – External people and factors do not help if influencing in nature!

The facts that work to engage if not engage are the very reasons for the Team break up! Remember break ups in a Team end up with anger and hatred. It is imperative that Teams try to remain the sum of its parts and not disintegrate.
