Teaching and Old Dog New Tricks - Crafting a Fulfilling Professional Career Portfolio

When I retired from a career in corporate life, spanning 40-plus years, I never set out with the intention of becoming a 'portfolio working' careerist. When my daughter asked me what I was doing with all my free time now that I had retired from corporate life, I had told her with much satisfaction that I am busy, but a 'happy busy'. 'So what is it that keeps you so busy?' she enquired. I did not have a name for it, so I was at a loss for words. The best I could do was explain that I was using my past experiences to learn new things. 'Like and old dog learning new tricks', she mused.

This little exchange caused me to reflect on recent past events and how fulfilling my working career has become, I now realise that I am now classified as a 'Professional Portfolio Worker'. I realsie also that I am blessed to have enjoyed a long career in corporate, something that taught me volumes about managing people and growing companies. I helps also that I hold academic and technical qualifications in business and industrial and consumer psychology.

A Portfolio Worker is defined as: A person who works for several different companies or organisations at the same time: A portfolio worker may have a variety of different clients that they offer different services to, or they may work part-time for a company and have their own business as well. Currently, my time is split between three pursuits, namely: providing my clients with people resourcing services and advice; helping small business grow through effective marketing and social media strategies and services; and pursuing my hobby of writing historical fiction stories. This career approach offers a blend of diverse roles, multiple income streams, and a tapestry of professional pursuits, redefining the very essence of a fulfilling work-life balance.

My story highlights the numerous advantages of portfolio working:

  1. Variety: Portfolio workers enjoy a diverse range of responsibilities, preventing monotony and boredom often associated with traditional careers. This variety keeps your work life fresh and exciting.
  2. Job Satisfaction: By choosing roles that align with my passions and interests, I have found profound job satisfaction. The autonomy to select projects that resonate with me, contributes to a fulfilling career.
  3. Flexibility: Portfolio working allows me to create a schedule tailored to my preferences. This flexibility is especially valuable as you transition into retirement and explore new opportunities.
  4. Continual Learning: As demonstrated by my shift into digital marketing, portfolio workers must be open to learning and acquiring new skills throughout their careers. This adaptability ensures continued relevance in the job market.

My lifestyle is not suited to all. To thrive as a portfolio worker, certain skills and traits are crucial:

  1. Adaptability: Embrace change and be willing to learn new skills as industries evolve.
  2. Time Management: Efficiently balance multiple roles and responsibilities, prioritising tasks effectively.
  3. Networking: Build a robust professional network to access diverse opportunities and collaborations.
  4. Self-discipline: Portfolio workers often have autonomy over their schedules, requiring self-motivation and accountability.
  5. Passion and Purpose: Pursue roles and projects that align with your interests and values for a fulfilling career.

My transition to a portfolio career showcases the possibilities that await those willing to explore diverse paths beyond the traditional corporate ladder. The journey embodies the spirit of adaptability, resilience, and the pursuit of passion that defines successful portfolio workers. By sharing my story, I hope to inspire others to consider the benefits and rewards of forging their unique career paths in today's dynamic job landscape. This career approach offers a blend of diverse roles, multiple income streams, and a tapestry of professional pursuits, redefining the very essence of a fulfilling work-life balance.
